I absolutely love the look of cropped pants. Also called ankle pants, pedal pushers, or even capris, cropped pants simply put are pant hems that hit above the ankle. Sure they’ve been around a long time, but I feel like in the past couple of years they’ve really hit their stride in women’s fashion. Even being petite, you’d think that a pant cutting my already short legs off above the ankle is a big fashion no-no but that’s not true!
Being petite should never stop you from wearing anything you’d like. I tell y’all all the time, wear what makes you feel amazing and comfortable and like the best version of yourself. But with that, I also share a few of my personal tips on styles and fits for someone that falls in the petite category. (Like me, I’m only 4’11!) I always want to give the illusion of looking taller and longer and you can totally still achieve that with cropped pants.
I’ve tried many, and I mean MANY cropped pants in my day. Hell, I’ve even cut some to make my own when pant legs were still just a little too long. I love the look of showing off a bit of ankle between my pant hem and my shoe. It can break up the outfit in what I think is a good way by showing a little leg skin. Ok, “leg skin” sounds gross but y’all know what I mean. Especially in outfits like the one I have on today where most of my body is covered.
It’s also important to remember that cropped pants are not the same as petite pants. Petite pants can be cropped, but not all cropped pants are petite. Does that make sense? You can find cropped pants (again, that means pant hems that hit above the ankle) for tall women as well. It doesn’t matter.
That’s why I love these particular LOFT cropped pants. I have them in the petite length so the shorter hemline hits exactly where it’s supposed to, about an inch above my ankle. You may even remember that I did an entire blog post dedicated to these pull-on pants a few months back…they’re that good! 4. Pull On Corduroy Pants
If you’re looking for a different style of pants for fall and winter, go for the corduroy. These pull-on elastic waist pants come in the prettiest shade of burgundy and also sage green.
5. Faux Leather Pants
Didn’t know I needed crop faux leather pants in my life till this exact moment but YES! How fun are these? Best part – they’re under $100!
6. Wide Leg Crop Sweatpants
Sweatpants so chic you can wear them outside the house…yes, please! These crop pants from Target are the answer to all our loungewear needs. Love that they come with a coordinating top too!
7. Cropped Wide Leg Pant
When you wear cropped pants, might as well have some fun! I love the daisy print on this pair of capris at Anthropologie. Somehow even with the widest part of the pant leg being mid-calf, these pants still create a long line.
8. Boot Crop Jean
I never would have thought a pair of boot cut pair of cropped pants would be something I’d gravitate towards but, how cute are these? No doubt this style of denim works for any body type too.
9. Crop Slacks
Every woman should own a pair of classic black slacks. I’m actually in the market for a new pair myself. I don’t wear them often but they’re a wardrobe staple no doubt!
10. Crop Knit Pants
I don’t know how Ann Taylor made a pair of dressy crop gray sweatpants but they did and I LOVE them! With these high waist pants, I’d stick to tops that skim the waistband to create a long leg line.
11. Tailored Crop Pant
You know I can’t resist pink pants! Love these tailored cropped pants from ASOS. The slim leg gives the illusion of a longer leg. Wear tops with these pants that show off the belted waistband too!
12. Crop Jeans
Levi’s makes some of my absolute favorite denim. Their 501 shorts are the best, in my opinion, for a short girl like me. So their 501 Crop Jeans of course have to be amazing too.
So there we have it, my picks for the best crop pants for short legs. When wearing capris, be it denim or knit or faux leather, you always want to make sure that they fit a bit higher up on your natural waist. Don’t wear a low rise! You always want to give the illusion of looking taller when you’re petite, so having the eye think your legs start up higher than they really do is the trick to styling them properly.
You can tell how I did that with my cozy winter look here today too. I’m wearing short pants that hit above my ankle and come up to my natural waistline. I added on a cropped sweatshirt (yes, this is the white version of the iconic blue Target sweatshirt I am obsessed with!) so my legs appear as long as they can be. Add on a coat because it’s freezing outside and some sneakers and I’m out the door!
