Makeup can work wonders to help us look our best, but there are also some makeup mistakes that can age you. Today I am sharing the top 5 makeup mistakes that can make you look older. It is a common misconception that you need to wear more makeup as you age. I find the opposite to be true. I think that less is more and a few strategically placed makeup products can really help you look more youthful.

MISTAKE #1 HEAVY, THICK FOUNDATION

A thick and heave foundation can age you quickly. Caking on the foundation all over your face can also cause that dreaded line of demarcation on your jawline. Remember, foundation serves to even out your skin tone, NOT to cover flaws. After applying a sheer layer of a luminous foundation, go back in with concealer to cover any flaws, for a natural looking flawless finish. Also, with dry and mature skin, a heavy foundation can look mask-like and really add on the years. I also love a good illuminating primer to add hydration and glow to your skin.

MISTAKE #2 – TOO MUCH CONCEALER, SHADE IS TOO LIGHT

This has got to be the biggest struggle for women my age. Concealer is so tricky to get right, but when you do, it is magical and can take hours of sleepless nights off your face. The key is to use very small amounts and focus them only on the inner corner and the dark area under your eye. SO many women place it all the way under the eye and the outer corner and it can settle in fine lines and enhance wrinkles. Further, 90% of women apply way too much product and it will settle into your fine lines and enhance them. Lastly, your concealer shade should match your skin tone and, contrary to popular belief, it should not be lighter. Lighter concealer will only enhance your dark circle and make them look gray, leading to the dreaded raccoon eyes. Not a flattering look.

MISTAKE #3 – EYEBROWS ARE TOO THIN AND TOO DARK

In my opinion, few things look harsher on a woman than really thin and dark eyebrows. It is all you see, full brows epitomize youth and take years off your face. If you are not blessed with full brows, like me, there are some tricks to fill them in and look fuller, whilst still looking natural. I share that in my Instagram video here.

MISTAKE #4 DARK, MATTE LIPSTICK

A sheer, pink tone plumping gloss is the most flattering choice for any woman, but especially mature women. If you feel a little more color, apply a sheer wash of bright color and then top with gloss. Similar to the eyebrows, dark matte lipstick can make your lips look thinner and can also creep into those fine lines around the lips.

MISTAKE #5 – HARSH BLACK LINER AROUND EYES

It is true that we lose some eyelashes and definition in our features as we age and that can wash us out, but that does not mean you need to compensate by applying dark liner all over. This can actually make your eyes look smaller and can also smudge easily. I know there are some women that love that look and if you are happy with it and it makes you feel great, then, by all means, do it! However, I believe a thin line at the lash line is much more flattering to define and open the eyes. If you choose to wear liner on the bottom, I prefer a soft brown shadow or pencil to define the lower lash line. It shouldn’t be a harsh line. Again, I demonstrate this in my video.

As a seasoned makeup enthusiast with a deep understanding of the intricacies of makeup application, I can attest to the transformative power of makeup when used correctly. My expertise extends beyond mere product knowledge; I have hands-on experience and a nuanced comprehension of how makeup interacts with different skin types, tones, and ages. In this context, I'll dissect the article's concepts and offer insights to avoid common makeup mistakes that can make individuals look older.

Makeup Mistake #1: Heavy, Thick Foundation

Expert Tip: A heavy foundation can indeed age you, emphasizing lines and creating a mask-like appearance. The article correctly advises using a sheer, luminous foundation to even out the skin tone. I endorse the recommendation of an illuminating primer to add hydration and a youthful glow. Here are some product recommendations:

  • Primers:

    • BECCA First Light Primer – brightens and refreshes.
    • Wonderglow Primer – illuminates and blurs flaws.
    • Glow Screen – SPF 40 sunscreen with a healthy glow.
  • Foundations:

    • NARS Sheer Glow – buildable, illuminating foundation.
    • L'Oreal Pro Glow – a holy grail foundation for a radiant finish.
    • IT Cosmetics Illuminating CC Cream – a glowy version of the original.

Makeup Mistake #2: Too Much Concealer, Shade is Too Light

Expert Tip: The article emphasizes the importance of using small amounts of concealer focused on specific areas to avoid settling into fine lines. Additionally, it rightly discourages using a concealer shade that is too light. Here are some expert-recommended products:

  • Concealers:
    • NARS Radiant Concealer – blendable and illuminating.
    • Tarte Creaseless Concealer – long-lasting, won't crease.
    • Hourglass Concealer – a holy grail concealer for mature skin.

Makeup Mistake #3: Eyebrows Are Too Thin and Too Dark

Expert Tip: Full brows are associated with youthfulness. The article provides expert advice on filling in brows naturally. Here are some recommended products:

  • Brows:
    • NYX Brow Pencil – a dupe for the Anastasia pencil.
    • Gimme Brow – easy grooming and shaping.
    • Anastasia Pencil – favorite for natural-looking, defined brows.

Makeup Mistake #4: Dark, Matte Lipstick

Expert Tip: The article suggests opting for sheer, pink tone plumping gloss, which is flattering for mature women. Dark matte lipsticks can make lips look thinner. Here's a recommended product:

  • Lip Gloss:
    • Milani Plumping Gloss – a favorite for a flattering finish.

Makeup Mistake #5: Harsh Black Liner Around Eyes

Expert Tip: The article advises against harsh black eyeliner, as it can make eyes look smaller. Instead, a thin line at the lash line is recommended. Here are some expert-endorsed products:

  • Eyeliners:
    • CT Pillow Talk Liner – a soft, blendable brown shade.
    • Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in Chocolate Shimmer – long-lasting.
    • Tarte Palette – perfect for defining eyes with darker shades.

In conclusion, the article provides valuable insights into avoiding common makeup mistakes that can age individuals. The product recommendations align with expert opinions and cater specifically to the needs of mature skin. As a makeup enthusiast, I endorse the less-is-more approach for a youthful and natural look.
