5 reasons to fall in love with the HGTV® Dream Home 2023 (2024)

When interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn brainstormed his design plan for the HGTV® Dream Home 2023, he knew the home’s rugged location would be the primary source of inspiration. Each room of this bright mountain home contains decorative elements that call attention to the Colorado landscape — including earth-toned hues and design accents that commemorate the area’s natural history and appreciation for the outdoors.

A color palette that reflects the terrain

Clay-colored hues, rocky grays and dusty greens are seen throughout the HGTV® Dream Home 2023. The home sits on 2.5 acres in the small Rocky Mountains town of Morrison, Colorado, home of the world-famous outdoor concert venue, Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Flynn used an earth-toned palette inspired by the canyon colors of the notable rock formations and soft greens from the surrounding plains. With the help of skylights, these colors appear truer — as though the sun were shining down on the natural landscape.

Location-inspired art

Rich with natural history, Morrison is a defining landmark for groundbreaking archeological discoveries — including the world’s first-known stegosaurus and apatosaurus fossils. Flynn commemorated these cretaceous findings through a painting of dinosaur fossils in the living room, as well as a framed field guide for fossil identification in the guest bathroom.

Flynn also included nods to the town’s diverse outdoor recreational opportunities through attention-drawing décor accents that are enhanced by natural light from skylights. The hallway walls feature an eclectic mix of winter sports and equestrian objects, with wooden snow skis and horseback saddles on full display. In the laundry room — a flex space that doubles as a home office — Flynn cleverly placed rock climber figurines to appear as though they were ascending up the terracotta walls.

A skylit hallway

Hallways are often dark, overlooked spaces in a house, but the HGTV® Dream Home 2023 hallway is a standout room in the home — with the skylight’s eye-catching architectural features serving as a natural light focal point. Like a walk through the woods, this hallway evokes feelings of inner peace as natural light from above shines down on the forest green walls.

Design that connects to the sky

With 282 sunny days a year, the Colorado blue skies draw many travelers year in and year out. VELUX NoLeak Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights throughout the home invite in the mountain fresh air and draw the eyes to the sky.

When it’s time for bed, guests can cuddle up under the covers and gaze at the starry sky through the skylight’s unique perspective. If waking up to natural light is a concern, the skylights come with remote-controlled shades to block the morning light.

A private soaking tub

Though natural elements inspire this year’s home, it does not fall short of luxury amenities. The main bathroom of the HGTV® Dream Home 2023 features a freestanding tub for a spa-like bathing experience that is enhanced by natural light and fresh air from skylights. When the window curtains are closed for privacy, the bathroom remains bright, cheery and private. Additionally, balanced natural light at the bathroom vanity makes getting ready in the morning an energizing experience — rather than a mundane task.
