Do you use any money saving apps?

There are absolutely loads of great apps these days which can help you save money on your supermarket shop. From freebies, to cash back, to discounted gift cards, here are five of my favourites. I use all of these every time I shop!

All the apps on this list are completely free touse. Download them all and you’ll be surprised how much you save!

Shopmium

Shopmium is my absolute favourite money savingapp. It offers huge savings on all sorts of goodies. Sometimes you can even pick up completely free products!I check it whenever I’m off to the supermarket, just to see what freebies or bargains I can pick up.

Shopmium, like all the apps on this list, is free to download. To use, simply browse the list of offers for anything that takes your fancy. Click through to the offer page, and the app will tell you which supermarkets are taking part in the offer. It will even show you your nearest participating supermarket on the app!

You buy the product as normal, then snap a picture of your receipt within the app. You will receive the cash back in your bank account within two days.

There is a always a range of products on Shopmium, but it seems to be especially good for treats and snacks! Some of my best deals were free chocolate, freeMikado biscuits, half price beer and free Nakd energy bars.

If you enter my referral code KFKAMYGX, you’ll get an extra special freebie for referrals only! Currently that’s a box of Cornetto ice creams, but past goodies have included Green & Black’s chocolate and Lindt reindeer at Christmas time.

You can see my full Shopmium review here.

Zeek

Zeek is a close second for my all time favourite money saving app! Zeek is an app (and website) for buying and selling discounted gift cards. Got agift cardfor your birthday that you know you’ll never spend? Sell it on, and make a bit of cash. Going shopping and fancy saving some money? Check Zeek before you go, and buy a discounted gift card to make your money go further!

Supermarket vouchers are some of the most popular, so they don’t have huge discounts – think around 2-3%. Still, that adds up when you think abouthow much you spend on groceries over the year.

Zeek has vouchers for pretty much any shop or restaurant you can think of, so it’s always worth checking before you buy! Some great discounts currently on the site are a £35 Pizza Express voucher for £30 and a £50 River Island voucher for £42.

Plus, if you sign up with my referral code 27ADS4KB, you will get an amazing£3 free credit to put towards any gift card you like!

CheckoutSmart

CheckoutSmart is another cash back app, similar to Shopmium. You buy the product upfront, and request cash back by uploadinga picture of your receipt. It usually has more offers than Shopmium, but the discounts aren’t usually as good. One nice feature is that you can filter offers by shop.

Be careful with CheckoutSmartbecause the number shown is actually the amount you get back, not the amount you pay. I find this quite misleading because I always assume it’s the other way round! So if you see a bigpot of yoghurt advertised as 20p, you might think you get the whole pot for that price, but you actually just get 20p cashback.

Also, Checkout Smart charges you a 5% processing fee if you request to cash out with a balance under £20. The money transfer also takes longer than Shopmium, at about 10 days.

I don’t like this one quite as much as Shopmium for these reasons. However,it does have great offers sometimes, so it’s wellworth checking!

Receipt Hog

Receipt Hog pays you to take photos of your receipts. Almost any receipts count, from supermarkets to restaurants to pet shops. You collect a certain amount of ‘coins’ for each receipt scanned. When you have enough coins, you can redeem them for various vouchers – or cash straightinto your PayPal account.

There are a few other ways to earn on Receipt Hog, which I wrote about here.

I’m not the hugest fan of Receipt Hog because I find it a bit boring, and it takes me ages to earn enough coins to get my reward. But I know some people do really well with it!

If you spend a lot in supermarkets and high street shops, and if you’re good at rememberingto snap receipts, you’ll do much better than me. One nice idea is to redeem your points as Amazon vouchers to put towards Christmas presents.

GreenJinn

GreenJinn is a fairly new app. It works in the same way as Shopmium and CheckoutSmart: check the app for offers before buying, then upload a picture of your receipt to get cash back.

One nice thing about GreenJinn is that it promotes healthy eating! Shopmium and Checkout Smart tend to have lots of offers on things like chocolate, crisps and alcohol. Great if you love your treats, not so great if you’re trying to eat well! By contrast, GreenJinn prioritises natural foods. Currently they have offers for things like fresh strawberries, bagged salad and tinned chickpeas. They also have a lot of toiletries and household products.

Also, GreenJinn learns your preferences as you go along – so you will see more offers for the products you buy often.

At the moment, only Sainsburys and Waitrose are available. GreenJinn saythey plan to add more supermarkets soon.

MySupermarket

This is great for people who like to shop around to get the best possible deal!

MySupermarket compares prices across a whole range of shops. Either search for a product on the app, or scan abarcode in store. The app will search for the product in all supermarkets and tell you where you can get it cheapest. It will also tell you if any particular supermarkets have a special deal on!

It covers 15 different supermarkets and they claim you can save an average of 30% per shop if you take advantage of all their suggestions. You can also make and save shopping lists within the app.

I recommend downloading all of these apps and using them together. The savings really add up.
