Granny chic has evolved to become the perfect blend of nostalgic and modern-day decor for those craving cozy and updated interiors. This decorating style, also called "grandmillennial" or "grandma chic," is expressed through traditional, ornate, and embellished details, such as intricately curved furniture and frilly pillows punctuated with a few sleek pieces of contemporary art and furnishings. We spoke to several interior designers and stylists that specialize in vintage and grandmillennial style about ways you can bring granny chic into your home.

What Is Granny Chic Style?

Granny chic style is the name of a decor style that embraces shabby chic style, maximalism, and eclectic style, resulting in a truly personalized room.

“I gravitate to grandmillennial style because it’s ‘anti-trend,’” says Julie McConville, owner ofvintage home decor retailer Fox & Park. “It’s a classic style that, with very few tweaks, will look current for years to come. It’s like the Jackie O of interiors.”

Designer Ashley Hardison, owner ofFIG Design Company, says that granny chic spaces are “filled with patterns, texture, light, and moments to gather,” with antique furniture, old books, candles, and plenty of color.

Here are a few more tips, followed by eight examples, on how to bring granny chic style into your home.

  • Make it unmistakably cozy: "Granny," for many, is synonymous with “cozy.” Think of granny style as, cozy, but stylish, incorporating knit or crochet blankets, patchwork quilts, and crewelwork.
  • Nod to tradition: Classic elements, such as classic crown molding and corbels, make up the bones of a grandma chic room. Include other traditional elements, such as an ornate crystal chandelier.
  • Overstuff for comfort: No one can resist the comfort of a pretty overstuffed wing chair or cushy upholstered piece and plenty of frilly pillows.
  • Infuse with vintage: A granny chic room is filled with decor that has character and history. Flea market fans and secondhand furniture lovers will no doubt embrace sustainable granny chic decor. Include an abundance of knickknacks, such as antique vases, trays, vintage candlesticks, and old cookbooks.
  • Add handmade items: Crafted, embroidered, and handmade items further personalize a granny chic space so that no two grandmillenial rooms will ever look the same.
  • Mix in modern: For a grandma chic room to read less "stuffy," add in contemporary accessories, a modern coffee table, or a bold piece of artwork. These touches freshen up and add quirky twists to a granny chic space.

Floral patterns and grandmillennial go hand-in-hand. Incorporating them into your wallpaper, fabrics, ceramics, or artwork is central to grandma chic style.

“Patterns like chintz, Indian block print, and botanicals work beautifully for fabrics, while Dresden style florals, Rose Medallion, and other Chinoiserie porcelains are perfect for ceramics,” blogger and stylist Katherine Medlin ofPender & Peony.

“Florals are charming as fabric on a slipcovered chair, a tablecloth [or] pillows of any size,” Hardison said. “Floral art is always delightful, and you can never go wrong with a [antique] vase or pitcher filled with fresh flowers. You can use florals all together in the same pattern, or mix and match your floral fabrics.”

Hardison says to always include pillows and blankets when designing a granny chic space.

“The thing that is fun with pillows is that you can have a floral fabric with a double pleat edge mixed with a [more formal] solid velvet pillow trimmed out by Samuel & Sons, and then maybe a gingham print in a different size which will allow you to accomplish layers, textures, and dimension, which is everything you need,” she says.

As opposed to minimalism, granny chic is more aligned with “cluttercore.” Medlin says any shelving, sideboards, and tables are typically decked out with unique tchotchkes, travel curios, and fresh flowers. Other common knickknacks: vintage silver or brass, candles, and artwork, both classic and modern.

“Grandmillennials are tired of the blank spaces and minimalism, but we want our decor with history [and] with character,” Medlin says. “It’s even better when the decor has meaning to us and our families, so we are particularly partial to family heirlooms and curios that express our personalities.”

This eye for the unique means the trend can embrace sustainability—instead of mass-produced pieces, those going for a granny chic look often search through second-hand and thrift stores for one-of-a-kind decor to upcycle.
