Queen Elizabeth I was the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty, who ruled England between 1558 and 1603. The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth became Queen aged 25, at a time of political crisis. The 'Virgin Queen' never married, but instead pledged her body to England itself.

She was very well-educated (fluent in five languages), and had inherited intelligence, determination and shrewdness from both parents. Her 45-year reign is generally considered one of the most glorious in English history. During it a secure Church of England was established.

Life in the Elizabethan era was marked by social hierarchy and strict class distinctions. Culture and arts thrived, particularly theatre with the works of William Shakespeare. Diseases were rampant and medical practices primitive. People were overall highly religious, with the Church playing a dominant role.

Much of the Her Majesty's childhood was spent surrounded by her family, including her younger sister Princess Margaret, and their many animals. Like any other child or teenager, she enjoyed playing games, learning the piano and even performing in plays.

During her reign, Elizabeth unified a Protestant England against the Catholic Spanish and defeated the Spanish armada in 1588. She was responsible for English exploration of the New World and the flourishing of the economy, making England a world power.
