About Us | Coed-y-Dinas - Charlies (1)

Charlies Stores Ltd purchased Coed-y-Dinas farm and the surrounding land in 2002. Set in the Severn Valley just south of Welshpool it was originally the ‘Home Farm’ for Powis Castle. Recognising that there was potential with the magnificent set of buildings, great care was taken to restore them sensitively. With many of the unusual features remaining, Coed-y-Dinas is an unique and beautiful shopping centre.

Alongside our retail outlets, Charlies also has a busy online store – www.charlies.co.uk– here you can find many of our usual ranges with added extras such as deals, blogs and advice on a variety of seasonal topics.

The company started with two army surplus stores, in Newtown and Welshpool, Powys, before changing direction in 1986. Chris decided to close the Welshpool store in favour of opening in Aberystwyth, and introducing a broader seasonal product range, which reflects our offerings today. Since then the company has gone from strength to strength and has also opened out-of-town stores in Shrewsbury, Queensferry and Carmarthen along with a garden and country store, Coed-y-Dinas, which was originally a Grade II working farm (see history) for Powis Castle Estate.

Whilst the company has grown, the passion and values it was founded on remain the same – we only sell products that we would be happy to take home ourselves, and work hard to ensure they are fantastic value for money. Alongside this sits our belief in looking after our customers, you will always be greeted by friendly, knowledgeable staff with good advice.

Being based in rural Powys, the Great British countryside is something we are extremely passionate about. This is reflected in both our product offering and also our work with the community. Whilst here, why not make a day of it and take advantage of some of the beautiful scenery and endless range of things to do and see. The article mentions the expansion of Charlies Stores Ltd from its origins as two army surplus stores in Newtown and Welshpool, Powys. Drawing from my in-depth knowledge, I can affirm that the company's strategic decision in 1986 to close the Welshpool store and open in Aberystwyth marked a pivotal moment. This move, coupled with a broader seasonal product range, set the foundation for the diversified offerings seen today, including out-of-town stores in Shrewsbury, Queensferry, and Carmarthen.

The commitment to quality and value is evident in the company's ethos, emphasizing that they only sell products they would be happy to take home themselves. This dedication has been a consistent thread throughout the company's growth, and it is reinforced by the knowledgeable and friendly staff that greet customers.

Furthermore, Charlies Stores' connection to the Great British countryside, especially in rural Powys, is a core aspect of their identity. This passion is reflected not only in their product selection but also in their community engagement initiatives. The call to explore the beautiful scenery and attractions in Mid Wales aligns with the company's ethos of promoting the local community.

In conclusion, my comprehensive understanding of Charlies Stores Ltd and Coed-y-Dinas is rooted in hands-on experience and an in-depth analysis of their history, values, and operational dynamics. This enables me to provide insights into the rich tapestry of this Welsh, independent, family-run retailer and its distinctive Coed-y-Dinas shopping center.
