What is the preferred address format for USPS? ›

Use the following guidelines:

All capital letters. No punctuation. At least 10-point type. One space between city and state.

The sender's name and address generally go in the top left corner of the envelope. The recipient's name and address should be in the lower center of the envelope. Any postage goes in the top right corner of the envelope.

One of the most common ways to validate an address is to use the USPS Address Verification tool. This tool is available on the USPS website and can be used to verify the accuracy of address information and standardize it to conform to USPS formatting rules.

There is no universally accepted address format. In nearly every country, the address format differs.

The exceptional address format (“Jane Doe or Current Resident” or “Jane Doe or Current Occupant”) may be used on any mail except mail types listed in 3.1. 2. The word “Current” is optional. You must have the right name (both first name and last name), a detailed address that includes the street name, the building number and unit name, city, state, and the correct PIN code of the location. This data is crucial and requires a double-check before addressing an envelope.

A sans-serif font is preferred. Addresses printed in all capital letters are also preferred. A return address is required in specific circ*mstances (see 4.2 and 602.1. 5 for more information about return addresses).
