It's the question that has popped into the heads of many who have helped their children marry - as father of the groom and heir to the throne, just how much did Prince Charles fork out for the Royal Wedding?

The Prince of Wales is set to publish his financial accounts today, including details on how much he contributed towards the royal nuptials earlier this year.

The accounts cover the 2010/11 financial year and are expected to give some indication of how much Charles, as the father of Prince William, contributed towards the costs of his wedding to Kate Middleton.

It was reported earlier this year that Prince Charles could be footing the bill for the wedding but it is now thought that the Queen, along with Kate’s parents, Carol and Michael Middleton also contributed to the cost.

It is believed the money provided by the families ran into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Charles and Camilla’s ‘modest’ register officer wedding five years ago cost £5million, while Charles and Diana’s ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral cost £4million back in 1981.

The total amount spent by Prince Charles on the wedding is expected to be included under his personal expenditure, but the bulk of the cash is likely to appear in next year’s accounts.

The figures will also give details about how much he earns from the Duchy of Cornwall – the landed estate given to the heir of the throne.

Figures from last year's accounts show the income from the Duchy of Cornwall rose from £16,458,000 to £17,161,000, while the funding from grants-in-aid and Government departments decreased from £3,033,000 to £1,664,000.

The Prince paid almost 13 per cent more tax during 2009/10, with his bill rising from £3,093,000 to £3,484,000, while official expenditure fell from £12,513,000 to £10,723,000.

The cost of the prince's official travel by air and rail will be included in today's figures. The journeys are paid for by the taxpayer through grants-in-aid.

During the past 12 months the prince and the duch*ess of Cornwall visited Portugal, Spain and Morocco in March and April, and last October toured India after Charles opened the Commonwealth Games in Dehli.

The heir is also noted for his fundraising work – though most of this if funded by profits from the Duchy Originals food label, he has also established highly successful fundraising offices in the US, Canada and Beijing.
