Hi,

I'm travelling to Bangkok this year and I was wondering if buying luxury items are cheaper in there, because of the currency exchange rate and those kinda stuff. Or will it practically be the same??

Thankyou!

Assuming you are talking about high end brand names broadly covering clothing, shoes, watches, fashion accessories ect?

The answer is no, it is almost always cheaper to buy in Australia. The only difference is that often you will find a make or model that is not available in Australia.

Depends what you're buying and where you're from. Just know the price before getting here, or keep your phone handy, to cross check price with home price.

I always look online for cheaper pricing, when out window shopping, before the purchase.

Many things are priced for the local economy, so may very well be cheaper here, as if same as western countries, the locals couldn't afford. Simply proves how marked up they are in your country.

I notice that quite often.

Are you aware of the Australian Government Tourist Refund Scheme under which "Australians and overseas visitors to claim a refund, (subject to certain conditions), of the goods and services tax (GST) and wine equalisation tax paid on goods bought in Australia and then taken out of Australia. As you leave the country, you must wear or carry the goods as hand luggage with you, unless the goods are oversized goods or liquids, aerosols and gels restricted to hold luggage for security reasons .... if you purchased the goods in the 60 days before you leave Australia."

Full details at https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/trav/ente/tour/are-you-a-traveller

So,depending on what you are considering buying in Bangkok you may find it cheaper buying at home then reclaiming the tax as you leave.

Hi kuki and welcome to Trip Advisor.

In my experience during recent years, many goods in Thailand are no cheaper than in Australia. Well known international brands are often more expensive as they are subject to import duty.

Depending on what you want to buy, doing so on line can often be the most advantageous.

Depends on where you are comparing it to but in general, NO.

The brands are subjected to a luxury tax, the prices are also high to maintain exclusivity.

Many Thais will travel to HKG for their high end shopping.

That being said, it may seem cheaper due to the lower cost of living.

There are also region specific items/exclusives that you may not find at home.
