This is according to research commissioned by Asos and conducted by market research agency Opinium between 6-13 December 2022. It found that 69% of the 2,000 respondents aged between 20 and 29 said that they plan to spend the same or more on clothing and fashion in 2023 as they did in 2022.
This year's most common fashion purchases are set to be focused on five main trends: film-inspired sheer and ethereal fabrics, fuchsia pink, 1990s-inspired grunge, ballet attire, and Y2K-inspired denim.
Sheer and ethereal
Asos predicts that one of 2023's top trends will be dictated by late-2022's and 2023's film releases, especially Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron and released on 16 December 2022; and The Little Mermaid, directed by Rob Marshall and premiering on 26 May 2023.
Both movies feature characters wearing flowing and sheer fabrics and, according to Asos, will drive appetite for ethereal dresses and tops in 2023.

Fuchsia pink
Similarly to sheer and ethereal clothing, the trend for all-pink monochrome - popularised by Italian fashion house Valentino at its autumn/winter 2022 catwalk show in March 2022 - will be further strengthened in 2023 with the July 2023 premiere of the film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig.
Eye-catching pops of colour will also be seen in Asos' selection of sneakers, which include Adidas' Samba and Gazelle styles in standard black and white as well as orange and pink as part of the shift towards brightly coloured dopamine dressing.

Ballet-ready
Asos predicts that ballet-inspired attire - including ballet pumps, base-layer jersey tops, sheer slips and skirts in subtle shades of greys, nudes, creams and white - will be one of the defining trends of 2023, already spotted on the catwalks of Miu Miu for autumn/winter 2022.
By tapping into the demand for comfort and functionality, ballet-inspired looks offer a more feminine alternative to mainstream sportswear attire like sneakers and hoodies.
1990s grunge
Asos's bestselling shoes include black Dr Martens lace-up boots, platform loafers and chunky sneakers, following Netflix's Wednesday TV series accelerating demand for the type of heavy footwear sported by the show's protagonist.

The etailer predicts that the trend will continue in 2023, with young shoppers flocking to grunge-inspired styles - such as oversized flannel shirts, leather jackets, slip dresses and chunky platform boots - as popular Gen Z singer and proponent of the style Olivia Rodrigo also releases her new album later this year.

Asos predicts that the resurgence of Italian denim and fashion brand Diesel will see young shoppers purchase more 2000s-inspired, low-cut, processed jeans and matching denim jackets to mirror the Canadian tuxedo outfits sported by singers Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears at the 2001 American Music Awards.
The trend has been especially visible at September 2022's London Fashion Week, where designers Masha Popova and Knwls sent models down the catwalks in frayed, bleached, stonewashed and printed denim for spring/summer 2023.
