Authenticity Guarantee Service

What is Authenticity Guarantee?

eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee is a service designed to protect sellers and allow buyers to shop with confidence. Our expert authenticators physically inspect all eligible items before they are shipped to buyers and inspect all returns prior to sending them back to sellers.

At this time, only select models within the following brands are eligible for Authenticity Guarantee: Yeezy, Jordan, Nike, adidas, New Balance, Asics, Vans, Reebok, Converse, Puma, Balenciaga, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Maison Margiela, Louis Vuitton, Crocs, Off-White, Fear of God, Dior, Y-3, YEEZY SEASON, A bathing ape, Versace, Visvim, Golden Goose, Rick Owens, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, RHUDE, Saint Laurent, Christian Louboutin, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Burberry, Valentino, Buscemi, Giuseppe Zanotti, Givenchy, MCM, Salomon, Hoka One One, On Running and MSCHF. Sneakers must be listed in the men’s or women’s athletic shoes, boys’ shoes, girls’ shoes, unisex kids’ shoes or baby shoes categories. We currently authenticate select items that are in new or pre-owned condition and starting at $75 (with the exception of sneakers listed in the baby shoes category, with eligibility starting at $100). Check your listings for the “Authenticity Guarantee” blue check mark badge to see if they are eligible. See below for more information on item eligibility.

How does Authenticity Guarantee work?

The blue check mark badge is applied to all listings eligible for eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee. When an eligible item is purchased, eBay will provide sellers with a free FedEx shipping label, which can be used to ship your order to our team of professional authenticators. The authenticators thoroughly inspect the item before shipping it to the buyer.

Will I be charged a fee for Authenticity Guarantee?

The Authenticity Guarantee service is free for a limited time. As part of the Authenticity Guarantee service promotion, eBay covers the cost of authentication, as well as provides sellers with a free FedEx shipping label to use for sending items to our authentication center.

What happens after eBay’s authentication center receives your sneakers?

After eBay’s expert authenticators receive your package, they will confirm the item and accessories are consistent with the listing title, description, and images. They will then perform a multi-point physical authentication inspection. Finally, an eBay Authenticity Guarantee tag will be attached and programmed with the unique details of the shoes.

What items are eligible for Authenticity Guarantee?

Select models within the following brands: Yeezy, Jordan, Nike, adidas, New Balance, Asics, Vans, Reebok, Converse, Puma, Balenciaga, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Maison Margiela, Louis Vuitton, Crocs, Off-White, Fear of God, Dior, Y-3, YEEZY SEASON, A bathing ape, Versace, Visvim, Golden Goose, Rick Owens, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, RHUDE, Saint Laurent, Christian Louboutin, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Burberry, Valentino, Buscemi, Giuseppe Zanotti, Givenchy, MCM, Salomon, Hoka One One, On Running and MSCHF.

Listings sold as a “lot” with multiple pairs of sneakers and items specified as “customized” are currently not eligible for authentication.

Only items purchased on eBay.com are eligible for Authenticity Guarantee. Items that are listed on eBay.com but located outside the U.S. for delivery to a buyer located within the US may be available for Authenticity Guarantee soon—check back for updates. However, items that ship to a buyer address located in Puerto Rico, Canada or Australia are eligible (items exceeding $2,500 shipping to Australia are not currently eligible for AG). Any other buyer addresses located outside of the U.S. are not eligible for the service at this time. Unincorporated territories (incl. Guam, Virgin Islands, North Mariana Islands, American Samoa and Palau) and Armed Forces postal locations are not currently covered.

Are pre-owned sneakers eligible for the service?

Yes. Select models within the following brands are now eligible for Authenticity Guarantee: Nike, adidas, Jordan, Yeezy, New Balance, Asics, Vans, Reebok, Converse, Puma, Balenciaga, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Maison Margiela, Louis Vuitton, Crocs, Off-White, Fear of God, Dior, Y-3, YEEZY SEASON, A bathing ape, Versace, Visvim, Golden Goose, Rick Owens, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, RHUDE, Saint Laurent, Christian Louboutin, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Burberry, Valentino, Buscemi, Giuseppe Zanotti, Givenchy, MCM, Salomon, Hoka One One, On Running and MSCHF.

How can I confirm my item qualifies for Authenticity Guarantee?

Within the shipping section of the listing flow, you will see confirmation that your item is eligible for Authenticity Guarantee. A blue check mark will automatically appear on your item’s listing page indicating that it is eligible for Authenticity Guarantee. Upon making a sale, you can also check your order details in the Seller Hub sold section. If eligible, you will receive a confirmation email indicating your item was sold with Authenticity Guarantee.

API sellers will see indicators on order management APIs for orders that qualify for Authenticity Guarantee and eBay shipping.

Why am I not seeing the Authenticity Guarantee badge on my listing?

If you are not seeing an Authenticity Guarantee badge at time of listing, check that you have done the following to ensure that your item can be properly evaluated:

  • Included the following item specifics:
    • Brand
    • Model
    • Style Code
  • Listed your item in an appropriate category with the correct and corresponding style code
    • Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Men > Men’s Shoes > Athletic Shoes (15709)
    • Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Women > Women’s Shoes > Athletic Shoes (95672)
    • Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Kids > Unisex Kids > Unisex Kids’ Shoes (155202)
    • Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Kids > Girls > Girls’ Shoes (57974)
    • Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Kids > Boys > Boys’ Shoes (57929)
    • Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Baby > Baby Shoes (147285)

If you have already listed your item and it is no longer showing the Authenticity Guarantee badge, we may have updated our eligibility criteria and your item is no longer eligible. However, your item’s shipping method will remain consistent with what was present during the listing flow (i.e. if your item was eligible for Authenticity Guarantee at listing, it will still be eligible for eBay shipping upon sale and you will be provided with a free label).

I sell on eBay now, do I need to do anything?

In order to properly protect you and the buyer, our authentication process is more stringent about how items are described, and the item condition selected. You should review your items listed in sneakers categories and double check that you have accurately described and depicted the item, including photos of any defects or cosmetic imperfections of the sneaker, the box and accessories.

What information is important to include when listing your sneaker?

Make sure you accurately describe and photograph your item, following steps 1-3.

  1. Select the appropriate Item Condition when you list your sneakers for sale:
    1. “New with box”

A brand new, unused, and unworn item in the original packaging (such as the original box). If using stock images or screenshots, all original accessories (laces, keychains, bags, etc.) must be included. If taking your own photos, everything pictured will be assumed included.

    2. “New without box”

A brand new, unused, and unworn item that is not in original packaging or may be missing original packaging materials (such as the original box). For example, new shoes (with absolutely no signs of wear) that are no longer in their original box fall into this category.

    3. “New with defects”

A brand new, unused item. Possible imperfections range from color variations to scuffs, cuts or nicks that occasionally occur during the manufacturing or delivery process. This also includes natural yellowing due to age. The item may be missing the original packaging materials or accessories (such as original box or laces). New factory seconds and/or new samples may fall into this category. Ensure all defects are photographed and noted in the description.

    4. “Pre-Owned”

An item that has been used, worn or showing signs of wear to the outsole, insole and/or lining of the shoe. The item may be missing the original packaging materials or accessories (such as original box or laces). Ensure all wear is captured in the photos and noted in the description.

  2. When filling out your item specifics, it is important to select the brand, model, style code, and size so the listings can be properly cataloged.
  3. Accurately describe your item in detail and take as many photographs as needed. Starting October 2023, sellers are required to add at least 5 photos when creating new sneakers listings. By adding more photos to your sneakers listings, you’ll likely see an increase in customer satisfaction and a decrease in significantly not as described (SNAD) rate. Any ‘new with box’ listings that match to an item in our product library are excluded from this change and only requires 1 photo to list. Ensure that you capture any defects including tears in the box and any anomalies on the shoe, etc. If using stock images or screenshots, all original accessories (laces, keychains, bags, etc.) must be included. If taking your own photos, everything pictured will be assumed included. Accurate documentation & photographs will ensure your item can flow through the authentication process smoothly.

Can I set up local pickup for my Authenticity Guarantee eligible listings?

Local pickup is not an option for Authenticity Guarantee eligible listings because these items need to go through eBay’s authentication process.

API sellers will be required to provide at least 1 shipping option while creating listings.

Who is providing the authentication service?

eBay’s team of professionally trained authenticators inspect and verify each sneaker utilizing detailed, physical inspection and advanced technical equipment in a state-of-the-art facility.

Why can’t I message the buyer after I sell my shoes?

Messaging capability is turned off at the point of purchase, at which time your buyer will receive all tracking information and notifications through the eBay platform.

What should I do if I need to cancel the order?

If you can’t complete a sale with a buyer, you can cancel the order by locating the sale in the “My eBay” tab and following the cancellation process. The buyer will be notified of the order cancellation immediately. Learn more about canceling an order.

Can buyers return items purchased with Authenticity Guarantee?

Buyers can return an item for any reason if you accept returns, and the return is requested within your stated return window. If you don’t accept returns or the return request falls outside of your return window, this will be considered final sale and cannot be returned, subject to any consumer law rights that the buyer has in the relevant jurisdiction in which the item is sold including rights that require exceptions to any “final sale” policy. Any item that does not receive our Authenticity Guarantee tag, will not fall under our final sale policy.

How does the return process work with Authenticity Guarantee?

For eligible returns we will instruct the buyer to send it back to the authentication facility. Your return policy determines whether you or the buyer pays for shipping costs back to the authenticator. Within two business days of receiving the item, the authenticator will check to verify that the returned item is the same item in the same condition in which it was originally sent to the buyer. The eBay Authenticity Guarantee tag must remain attached to the item and untampered with to be eligible for a return. If the shoes pass the authenticity and condition inspection, they will be returned to the seller. Otherwise, the shoes will be sent back to the buyer. If fraud is detected, eBay will work with authorities to take appropriate action. If the item’s authenticity cannot be verified, sellers will cooperate with removing the item from marketplace circulation.

Why would my item be returned to me by the authenticator?

Your item may be returned to you if it does not pass our authentication checks, or if the item condition is not consistent with your photographs and item description. You will not be charged for the cost of shipping the return and a refund will be issued to the buyer immediately. If the item’s authenticity cannot be verified, you will cooperate with removing the item from marketplace circulation.

What will happen if my item is damaged or lost while in the possession of the authenticator?

In this unlikely event, eBay will cover such loss or damage of the item.

What automated protections does eBay have for sellers?

We have automated protections for sellers who send their item to the authentication center within their stated handling time. Once the item is inspected and has been forwarded to your buyer, you are fully protected against any negative or neutral feedback, the Item Not Received cases will be removed from your Service Metrics dashboard before your next evaluation cycle. Should an Item Not Received case be closed and a refund issued to your buyer, you will not be responsible for that refund as long as eBay has tracking confirming delivery to the authentication center which can be found in the View Order Details.

Shipping

Why is eBay giving me a free shipping label?

eBay shipping labels create more consistency in pricing and shipping times for both buyers and sellers. That means buyers get their order delivered faster. Sellers can easily print a free eBay shipping label and drop off a package at a nearby FedEx drop off location. Orders shipping through eBay’s Global Shipping Program and eBay International Shipping will also receive a free label.

Do I have to use this eBay provided label?

No, but you will have to pay for an alternative shipping service, if that is your preference. When you print free FedEx shipping labels through eBay, tracking details are automatically sent to your buyer and your shipment is covered in the event it’s damaged or lost in transit.

Can I change the shipping service or add additional shipping options?

At this time, you can’t change the domestic shipping service or add additional domestic shipping options for orders sent through eBay shipping. For international shipping, you need to specify your shipping service for sending parcels to countries beyond Canada and Australia.

How do eBay shipping labels work?

eBay has made printing labels very easy. After you pack your item securely, print the free FedEx shipping label and stick it to your package. (You’ll need to log in to ebay.com to take advantage of this new feature. Your free label will be available in My eBay or Seller Hub.) Then drop the package off at your local FedEx drop off location. If you don’t have access to a printer, use the free QR code to have participating FedEx drop off locations print the label for you.

Will I only receive a free label for Authenticity Guarantee eligible sneakers?

Yes.

How come my item does not have/include eBay shipping?

As we continue to refine and expand our Authenticity Guarantee eligibility criteria, your items may become eligible after you have listed. If your item has an Authenticity Guarantee badge on its listing page and not eBay shipping, we recommend that you revise your listing to enable the free eBay shipping label.

How can I print a packing slip?

After you create a shipping label, you can print a packing slip from the shipping labels page. You can also print a packing slip in My eBay or Seller Hub.

How long do I have to ship my item?

Sellers can choose a handling time of 3 business days or less. Once a buyer has paid, you should ship to eBay’s authentication center within your stated handling time.

What if I ship the item after the “ship by” date?

To meet the handling time in your listing, remember to ship the item on or before the "ship by" date. If you have missed the “ship by” date, please proceed to ship the item out as soon as possible.

I used to be able to select handling time longer than 3 days, but cannot anymore. Why?

We want to provide a consistent experience for our buyers. Since eBay is providing the shipping label, we ask that you limit handling time to 0-3 days to ensure that buyers receive their order quickly and we are able to estimate their delivery date accurately.

Can I offer combined shipping?

Authenticity Guarantee items will not be eligible for combined shipping promotions since each authenticated item is split into a separate order for processing. Please ship all orders individually.

Can I use the same free shipping label for all the sneakers sold in a single order?

If the buyer purchased more than one pair of the same sneakers, these will come through in a single order. You should be able to fit them in one box and send it out with the free shipping label, as long as the box is under the maximum weight and dimensions specified on the Ship Your Item page. If you need to use a second box, get an additional free label by choosing “Print another label” on the order.

How do I track the status of my item?

You can track the status of your item throughout the process in the View Order Details section of My eBay or Seller Hub.

What is the estimated delivery time for Authenticity Guarantee items?

Our authenticators will inspect the item within two business days after they receive it. Following inspection, the item will be shipped to the buyer with three-day delivery.

Is signature confirmation required upon delivery?

If you ship with eBay’s free FedEx shipping label, you simply place the label eBay provides you on the shipment. If you decide to ship to the authentication hub without using the label provided by eBay, signature confirmation is required only for items that are valued at $750 or more.

Can I include extra items in the box when I ship my sneakers?

Any items that don’t come directly from the manufacturer will be removed. This includes third party tags, marketing materials, and any forgotten or prohibited items.

After I sell my item, where do I ship it?

eBay will provide you with the address of our authentication facility along with the buyer’s name and a unique ID number. When shipping with eBay’s free FedEx shipping label, the exact address and unique ID will automatically be provided on the label for you. If you are NOT using eBay’s free shipping label, please be sure to use the exact address eBay provides, including the unique ID number, and ensure you upload the tracking number to the order. Once your shoes are verified and authenticated it will be forwarded on to the buyer’s address at no cost to you.

As we continue expanding the Authenticity Guarantee service, we are opening new authentication facilities to optimize for a seamless end-to-end customer experience. This will ensure your item reaches your buyer as efficiently as possible. As of March 2023, we have authentication centers in Nevada and New Jersey. Please ship to the authentication center shown on your order to ensure a smooth and seamless customer experience.

What are best practices when shipping sneakers to the authentication center?

After you’ve sold your item, it’s important to pack it securely, in the right type of packaging, to make sure it gets to your buyer in perfect condition. Here are some tips on packing your item:

  1. Choose a container that’s slightly larger than the item, so you can cushion it with packing material on all sides.
  2. Surround the item with cushioning, like compostable packing peanuts, so there’s no room for things to move around.
  3. Use clear or brown packaging tape, eBay-branded tape, reinforced packing tape, or paper tape, which should be at least 2 inches wide.
  4. Don’t use masking tape, cellophane tape, cord, string, or twine.
  5. Tape the opening of the box and reinforce all seams and edges.
  6. Clearly label the package and include a return address.
  7. If you’re reusing a box, remember to cover any previous labels and cross out any previous addresses with a black marker.
  8. You can also print a packing slip and include it in your package when you print your label.

How do I provide tracking information?

Tracking details are automatically uploaded and sent to your buyer when using a free eBay shipping label.

Otherwise–once you’ve shipped the item, you’ll need to upload tracking information through “My eBay.” Providing tracking information ensures your item will be authenticated and you’ll be covered by seller protections. It also allows buyers to track the progress of their purchase through each step of our authentication process.

How do I ensure my listings are eligible for shipping to Canada or Australia?

In order to take advantage of free shipping to Canadian and Australian buyers, please ensure Canada and Australia are not excluded from your ship-to countries in your shipping preferences and that you have selected ‘No Returns’ in your returns policies. After the sale, eBay will provide you with a free shipping label to use for getting the item to our authentication center, which automatically includes the buyer’s name and a unique ID number and eBay will take care of the rest.

If your item sells abroad, you will be bound by the buyer protection policies of the site on which the item is sold and, potentially, the consumer and return laws of the country of the relevant site. You will also be responsible for eBay’s standard international fees that apply to these sales. If you do not want your item to be sold to buyers internationally, you can exclude countries or regions you don’t want to post to by updating your shipping settings.

Items exceeding $2,500 shipping to Australia are not currently eligible for Authenticity Guarantee at this time.

How do I restrict my listings from shipping to buyers located outside of the US?

In order to exclude buyers that are located outside of the US from purchasing your item, go to your shipping preferences and choose the locations you wish to exclude.

The Authenticity Guarantee service for Sneakers (“Authenticity Guarantee” or “Authenticity Guarantee for Sneakers”) makes expert inspection and authentication services (the “Services”) mandatory for certain items sold on eBay.com. These Authenticity Guarantee Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) apply to the Authenticity Guarantee service for Sneakers and Eligible Items detailed below and sold or purchased on eBay.com, and set out the terms on which eBay offers you access to and use of the Authenticity Guarantee service for Sneakers.

  1. Applicability of eBay User Agreement.

The eBay.com User Agreement, eBay’s User Privacy Notice, and all policies posted on our sites (collectively, and as the same may be amended from time to time, “eBay’s Policies”) apply in addition to these Terms. In the event of a conflict or inconsistency between these Terms and eBay’s Policies, these Terms will control as to all matters that they explicitly address. For all matters not explicitly addressed by these Terms, eBay’s Policies will control.

  2. Applicability of eBay’s Money Back Guarantee.

For authenticated items, eBay’s Money Back Guarantee only covers items returned within the seller’s return window and items that satisfy the eMBG eligibility requirement. Please note items must also be in the condition they were received, with no added damage or defects. Learn more about eBay Money Back Guarantee.

  3. Description of the Authenticity Guarantee Service.

After the purchase of an Eligible Item (description in Section 6(a) below) on eBay.com, the item is shipped to our team of authenticators to carefully inspect the item for authenticity and accuracy against the item listing. Upon confirmation of the item by our expert authenticators, it is properly packaged and securely shipped to the buyer. If the item’s authenticity cannot be verified or the item is significantly not as described, the item is returned to the seller and a refund is issued.

  4. Description of the Services.

The Services are provided by our team of authenticators for Eligible Items purchased within the United States and delivered to the United States, Canada or Australia. eBay’s authentication team will inspect the item within two (2) business days of receipt at their facilities. This check will include inspection of the shoe for authenticity and accuracy against the item listing. Accessories such as laces will not be authenticated if they are noted in the listing as replacements. In such cases, the condition of accessories will instead be verified against the listing.

Items may also be photographed for use by eBay or its licensees as part of eBay’s image catalog or for any other purpose, at eBay’s exclusive discretion.

By listing for sale or purchasing an Eligible Item, you acknowledge and agree that the Eligible Item will be sent to the Authentication center to perform the Services. More information about eBay’s Authentication service may be found here.

  5. Authenticity Guarantee Service Fees.

More information on returns under the Authenticity Guarantee can be found here.

    3. Circumvention of Buyer and Seller Requirements.

If buyer or seller circumvent or do not comply with Sections 7.a or 7.b of these Terms, or if buyer or seller violate or are found to be non-compliant with the Terms, eBay reserves the right to take immediate action such as, but not limited to, account restriction or suspension and/or the transfer of fees and costs associated with Authenticity Guarantee.

    4. Impact of Fraud Detection on Buyers and Sellers.

You acknowledge and agree that if our team of authenticators detects fraud or suspects that an item is counterfeit, the item will be removed from marketplace circulation. In addition, eBay will work with the proper authorities as needed and reserves the right to confiscate and destroy any items determined to be counterfeit.

  9. Data Privacy.

eBay’s collection of personal information in connection with the Authenticity Guarantee service is governed by the User Privacy Notice that applies to your use of the eBay.com website or, as applicable, another eBay international site. In order for eBay’s authentication team to provide the Services under Authenticity Guarantee, the order information, including, but not limited to: your name, address, email address, telephone number, is provided to eBay. By selling or purchasing an Eligible Item, you direct eBay to provide this order information to eBay’s authentication team, who may disclose this information, however collected, to service providers and other third parties (such as shipping carriers and revenue authorities) as necessary to perform the Services.
