Avon is a strong advocate of both the ethical and humane treatment of animals and the protection of human health and safety. Our products are developed utilizing alternative testing methods such as extrapolations from existing data, computational modeling, in vitro (test tube/cell culture) testing, and clinical tests with human volunteers, to ensure both their efficacy and safety.
As a member of the LG Household and Healthcare (LG H&H) family, Avon sells products developed for North America and global markets. At present, authorities in China require animal-based safety testing for cosmetic products in a few specific categories sold in China.
LG H&H is committed to global adoption of non-animal safety substantiation methods. We appreciate that authorities in China now accept alternative methods for an increasing number of cosmetic categories, including shampoo, body washes and color cosmetics. In addition, alternative safety substantiation is accepted in China for products manufactured locally, and we are in the process of transferring production of several cosmetic categories to our subsidiaries there. As a member of our industry association, the Personal Care Products Council, we are working with Chinese authorities to eliminate animal testing requirements for all cosmetics, and we look forward to a timely resolution to this issue.

Are your ingredients or components tested on animals before they are formulated?
Neither Avon or LG requires that ingredients used in our products be tested in animals. Instead, ingredient safety is confirmed through tests in non-animal models such as cell cultures and chemical structure analyses.

Respect for animal welfare is a cornerstone of Avon's product safety philosophy. In fact, Avon was the first major cosmetic company to end animal testing nearly 25 years ago and we do not test on animals today. Instead, we use non-animal product safety testing methods.
Many cruelty-free brands have grown to become trusted household names. Popular brands like Seventh Generation or Method cleaning products, John Paul Mitchell hair care products and Lush cosmetics are widely available cruelty-free options. Other favorites include Alba Botanica, Kiss My Face, Wet n Wild and Jason.
The Animal Welfare Act is a federal law that sets minimal standards for the treatment of certain warm-blooded animals used in experiments. The law also requires that unannounced inspections of all regulated animal testing facilities are carried out annually, although some facilities only receive partial inspections.
Avon performs well across all categories of our research, receiving top marks for its Environmental Report, stance against using GM ingredients and Animal Welfare.
