Mariana and Anne Lister never got back together. Anne died on September 22, 1840, and Mariana died on October 31, 1868.

Skipton's Broughton Hall doubled for the home of Anne Lister's other lover Marianna Lawton, who's played by Lydia Leonard: Lawton Hall, which is really in Cheshire. It also stood in for the Rawsons's grand pile Stoney Royd.

Although the two women carried on their clandestine relationship for a number of years, their hopes of eventually being together were never realised and Anne had other affairs. Mariana outlived Anne and died at her sister's home in London at the age of seventy-eight.

After Anne Lister died, Ann Walker inherited Shibden Hall and estate and lived there alone from 1841. However, she was not allowed to be resident there for long.

John Lister (1847 – 1933) of Shibden Hall was the son of Dr John Lister (1802-1867) who inherited Shibden after Ann Walker's death.

Anne Lister's diary records a nasty insect bite in early August 1840, and her last entry was written within a few days. She died of a prolonged fever six weeks later, aged 49, at the edge of the Russian empire (in what is now Kutaisi, Georgia) – the furthest her extensive travels had ever taken her from Shibden Hall.
