Bills fans set table on fire in wild tailgate scene (2024)
Buffalo Bills fans threw one of their own onto a flaming table on Sunday.
Jumping onto and breaking folding tables is one of the Bills fan base’s most heralded tailgating traditions, and fans were determined to bring that custom on the road for a Week 2 matchup in Miami — but with a hot twist.
Video posted Sunday shows a group of fans setting a folding table on fire, then throwing a seemingly willing fellow fan into the flame.
The fan hit the table with a thud, but didn’t have the momentum to break it. He quickly escaped to a safe distance, while the table was left bent downwards, but not fully broken, and the fire continued to burn.
This was not the first instance of Bills fans using fire for their table-breaking tradition.
In January when Buffalo hosted the Tennessee Titans in the wild-card round for the organization’s first home playoff game since 1996, a video posted on Twitter showed fans unleashing 25 years of playoff excitement with a similar flaming table stunt.
The fan that was thrown onto that table did successfully break it, but also paid the price as his clothes were inflamed and he frantically tried to smother it on the snow-covered ground before suffering serious burns.
Now, the flaming table tradition doesn’t even seem to be reserved for historic playoff games, as fans are now using it for a mere regular season road game against the Dolphins.
As for why they jump on tables, it's a tradition that started in the parking lots of Orchard Park, where Bills fans tailgate before games. The identity of the first Bills fan to jump through a table is unknown, but it has since become a tailgate tradition.
Why is Buffalo's nickname the Bills? The nickname is a reference to American soldier and frontiersman "Buffalo Bill" Cody. He hunted buffalo to feed construction crews on the Union Pacific Railroad and claimed to have slaughtered 4,280 buffalo.

The answer is most likey the same one as many other questions when something odd happens: the internet is to blame. There's no known definitive start to the table-smashing trend but other internet sleuths point to a drunk Bills fan going viral by falling face-first into a bus in 2015.
Two main reasons were given in the lead-up to stadium negotiations. One was the cost. The other factor, according to the team, was that they believed fans didn't want it.
The Buffalo Bills might have a blue bison in their logo, and their mascot Billy Buffalo might also be a (you guessed it) blue bison, but the animal simply represents the city name — NOT its team name. The Bills, instead, are named after "Buffalo Bill" Cody, a man who literally hunted bison.
In short, "Bills Mafia" refers to the Buffalo Bills fan base. But for that fan base, "Mafia" means family. And that family is among the most gracious in the NFL, constantly giving back to the community and to charitable causes championed by Bills players and even players from opposing teams.
Heidnik was one of three real-life murderers upon whom author Thomas Harris based Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb, the villain of his 1988 novel The Silence of the Lambs. In 2018, the band SKYND released a song which was based on the events, featuring Jonathan Davis from Korn.
Vapes come in all shapes and sizes, with varying degrees of metal and plastic components, but many will set off a detector when you pass through it. If the cartridge contains hard plastic or zirconia ceramic, there's a chance it'll get through, but there's no guarantee because of what's beneath the surface.
The Bills' website (buffalobills.com) has a section devoted to tailgating dos and don'ts, under the header "Parking."
