Burberry's trench coats: The Chelsea, The Kensington, and The Westminister (2024)

Burberry's trench coats: The Chelsea, The Kensington, and The Westminister (1)

There’s a reason why Burberry trench coats are top notch. Mainly, it’s because Burberry invented the trench coat. Made using gabardine—another game-changing Burberry invention—they were the more lightweight updates to military coats and were most prominently used by British soldiers during the First World War. Since then, thewater-resistant outerwear has seen countless modifications and iterations. The core design however, has always remained.

Burberry's trench coats: The Chelsea, The Kensington, and The Westminister (2)

Burberry’s series of Heritage Trench Coats, that was first launched in 2014, has now been streamlined to make it easier to find the perfect one (or two). The new edit features three types of fits—The Chelsea, The Kensington and The Westminster—with each offered in two lengths and up to five different colours.

Burberry's trench coats: The Chelsea, The Kensington, and The Westminister (3)

All of Burberry’s Heritage Trench Coats are made in Castleford, England and are lined with Burberry’s Vintage check pattern. The difference is mostly in the fits, and as proven by these shots by Thurstan Redding, they’re anything but old-fashioned. The Chelsea is the slimmest of the three and is constructed with rounded shoulders for men. The Kensington has a more classic fit with a neat, straight drape. And if you favour a more relaxed silhouette, The Westminster is constructed using tropical gabardine (the most lightweight variation yet) and comes only in a long length for men.

Burberry's trench coats: The Chelsea, The Kensington, and The Westminister (4)

All three styles for men are available in classic honey, black, dark military khaki and mid-grey. They’re relatively easy colours to add to your own personal style arsenal. A Burberry trench coat is such a timeless investment anyway, so you can’t go wrong having one in your wardrobe.
