I know they aren't recommended to wear if you already have issues with your feet, but can Crocs be the direct cause of such issues?

Crocs are definitely not a good footwear option for day-long use. It looks comfortable and relaxing, but it will cause foot or leg pain. It is because crocs' design mechanics are to make your shoe or sandal non-slippery.
Additionally, it does not have proper ankle support. You will feel leg or ankle pain without ankle support all day long.

Yes, crocs can cause foot issues when not used appropriately. Ideally, they are best for short term occasional wear. When you use them otherwise, crocs place additional stress on the sole and lead to gripping with the toes. Consequently, this causes foot pain, tendonitis, and callus/corn formation, among other foot issues

Crocs can cause foot pain when not used appropriately. Ideally, crocs are best for short-term usage. However, when you begin to wear them for long periods, you may experience foot pain because of their flexible shank and minimal heel support. Likewise, they can also cause toe issues due to gripping with toes.
