Gabrielle Chasnel was born in the summer of 1883, to an itinerant merchant father and a seamstress mother (an unmarried union). She sadly lost her mother at the age of twelve.
Upon the initiative of her father, who she nevertheless boundlessly adored, the young girl was placed with her two sisters in an orphanage in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of western France.
This life in the orphanage, regulated by rigour and austere hours, led Chasnel to devote herself to sewing. This place also had an unequivocal influence on the later conception of her style, from which she drew the pure lines and neutral colours of her collections.
Gabrielle Chasnel became Coco Chanel before 1910, the year the designer opened her first boutique on rue Cambon in Paris thanks to the financial support of her lover, the polo player Boy Capel.

Along the lines of her fashion creations launched around 1915, offering cuts combining simplicity and practicality, women’s suits, post-World War II tweed suits, perfume lines in the 1930s and leather goods accessories, notably Chanel bags, were developed in the 1950s.
Chanel has been interested in bag design since the early 1920s, before her first model was presented in 1929.
Chanel bags were a success from the very beginning, so the designer rethought her design in different formats. Thus the 2.55, a model that can be worn as a shoulder strap, made in lamb leather variations for everyday use, with a more satiny or silky texture in its more elegant version, was marketed as early as 1955.
In her quest for a practical, unobtrusive design, Chanel took inspiration from military ammunition storage bags. The inside of her bag has multiple pockets for personal documents and make-up accessories for elegant women.
This classic of the new Chanel style has been copied many times. The bag can be recognised by its chain shoulder strap, making it easy to carry and freeing the arm. It complements the most classic and trendy outfits.
The successful model is enriched by the clasp composed of the two intertwined letters CC, which can be traced back to the work of German couturier and stylist Karl Lagerfeld in 1983 when he became artistic director of the Chanel house.
In 2007, the designer launched an exclusive thirteen-piece Diamond Forever made up of the famous alligator-lined white gold chain.
