No outfit is complete without the perfect pair of shoes to finish it off. Once you’ve selected that beautiful dress and sparkled it up with some gorgeous accessories, it’s time to turn your attention to your shoes.
Location
The first thing you need to think about is location, as you will have done with the rest of your outfit no doubt. Heels are usually appropriate for a formal setting, but wouldn’t work at a beach wedding in the sand; a wedge would be better suited. Non-traditional weddings that are located somewhere unusual, perhaps on uneven ground or outdoors, might even require flat footwear.
Heel Height
If you have decided to go with an elegant heel to dress up your beautiful outfit then it’s time to decide the height. A kitten heel is going to be more comfortable if you struggle in high heels. Don’t underestimate the comfort value of your shoes on the day, if you’re uncomfortable it will impact on your whole experience and the last thing you want to be worrying about, are your feet aching.
If you can manage a slightly higher heel, then consider pairing a stiletto heel with dresses that already elongate your legs, such as an outfit with a pencil skirt shape. A stiletto heel will give the impression that your legs are even longer.
Colour
You will need to select a shoe colour based on the colour palette of your outfit. This doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be an exact match, just something complementary. A plain outfit or dress could be worn with a bright shoe colour to bring the whole outfit to life. If you are wearing a patterned dress, then a plain shoe would be better, so there is not too much going on.

Season
If the big day is months away it’s easy to fall into the trap of choosing shoes that are perfect for the current season, but not really suitable for the wedding season. It’s likely that even at an indoor wedding you will spend some of the time outside and might want to think about the typical weather during that time. Summer might call for an open toe shoe, or even a sandal depending on your preference. Winter might require a closed heel or even a booted heel depending on dress style.
When shopping for your outfit we recommend finding your dress first and then fitting the shoes around it. It can be much more difficult and limiting to find a dress to match an existing pair of shoes, so try to leave accessories and shoes until afterwards.
