What is the 4DX format? ›

4DX is a 4D film presentation system developed by CJ 4DPlex, a subsidiary of South Korean cinema chain CJ CGV. It allows films to be augmented with various practical effects, including motion-seats, wind, strobelights, simulated-snow, and scents.

4DX Screen (formerly 4DX with ScreenX) is the combination of 4DX and ScreenX film formats which presents films in a multi-screen auditorium with enhanced motion and environmental effects, with an additional fourth-screen projected on the ceiling and the newest 4DX chair models.

For those that don't know, ScreenX is a format that offers additional images down the side walls of the auditorium (yes, really), expanding the image to the sides, rather than above and below that image as IMAX does.

4DX films will not necessarily be presented in 3D. If the particular film is also presented with 3D, glasses will be required. 3D glasses are available to purchase in cinema for an additional $1.00, and are yours to keep and reuse on future visits. 3D glasses are not included in the ticket price.

"WARNING: 4DX is not suitable for women who are pregnant, the elderly, or persons with medical conditions (including heart conditions and high blood pressure), or injuries. It is also not suitable for babies, children under 4, persons under 3' 4" (102 cm) tall or people weighing over 265 lbs (120 kg).

4DX will be fun only once for most. It is an experience in itself but movie is sidelined with distractions from movement etc. IMAX screen is much larger, brighter and better. it is meant for cinema lovers.

There's no bad seat in a 4DX auditorium as they all move along with the action. That being said, you'll be more engulfed by the fog and the bubbles closer to the front as that's where the machines are located, and you'll get a fuller experience of the rain right in the centre of the auditorium.

Where is the best place to sit at 4DX? ›

So seats in the first three to five rows center are perfect. The reason is the feeling of immersion and immediacy which are afforded me in the front of the house.

The 4d experience is good for the right film but it has some way to go. We saw the Avengers which was set well, the chairs moved at the right time and the wind was a nice touch.

It is immersive in the sense that there's more going on but once you have seen it once, it just becomes repetitive and underwhelming, arguably a little distractive. The fact that it isn't there all the time is also a little odd. It was good to experience it once. Really not bothered about seeing it again.
