For me, “Coastal Grandma” is less of a style (look) and more of an aesthetic, one we’ve been embracing in our Coastal Communities, unaware that we were trending. Think Oprah, Ina Garten, Martha Stewart, or my personal favorite, Diane Keaton, who by the way, was 56 years YOUNG, when she filmed the movie Something’s Gotta Give. The best part? You don’t have to be a grandmother or live in a coastal community to try out this look. Furthermore, there’s a good chance you can recreate a Coastal Chic look, with items you already own in your closet!

Get the Look

To put together a “Coastal Chic” look, head on over to your closet and browse for items that look and feel luxurious and comfortable. Think simple, yet chic. Perhaps you begin by pulling out pieces in any shade of white.

  • Anything in a natural lux fabric; think linen, cotton, silk
  • A white button-down
  • Blue & white stripe pieces
  • Chambray/denim
  • Straw or bucket hat
  • White pants, jeans or shorts
  • Sneakers, nude flip flops/sandals, loafers
  • Straw, basket or canvas tote

Put Your Own Twist on the Trend

Many of us feel washed out in neutrals – or just prefer to wear more color. Here’s how I put my own twist on the look, pairing these colorful J Crew silk pajama pants with my favorite white shirt (a Coastal Grandma most-have!) and Eric Javits straw bucket hat.

Ooh, I love your looks in this post, Suzanne. This aesthetic definitely suits you! This style prompt got me thinking about how relative the ideas of old and young are. When I first watched Something’s Gotta Give, I definitely viewed DK as “old”. But now that I am not far from her age in that movie, suddenly she seems very young in that film. And as the human lifespan increases, that also effects our perceptions of old and young. I am shooting for another 100 years of life from this point on so really I am still just a child!
