The coat length should be based on the size of the body. A good guide is the rule that the hem should preferably end a hand's breath above the knee. This length has a visually elongating effect. Especially shorter men should choose a short coat to achieve a good proportion ratio.

Generally, a knee-length coat is a classic choice that is flattering for most body types and is suitable for formal occasions. If the wearer is taller, a mid-thigh or even full-length coat may be a better option. Alternatively, a cropped or waist-length coat can be a stylish choice for petite individuals.

Our rule of thumb holds that when standing upright with your arms relaxed at your sides, the jacket hem should hit mid-palm, or where the thumb meets the palm of the hand. To test if you have the appropriate length, try cupping the bottom of the jacket with your fingers.

Some people prefer a longer overcoat that goes down to their knees, while others prefer a shorter overcoat (known as a car coat or a 3/4 length coat) that ends just below the hips. A good rule of thumb is to try on a few different lengths and see which one looks and feels the most comfortable to you.

If you do decide to go for it, make sure the hem hits mid-calf or a bit longer, and that the fit through the shoulder and body of the coat is slim. And stand up straight! (Your mom nagged you about that for a reason—it makes you look taller.)

This is the general advice for buying a jacket so that it won't be too tight. Having the jacket a little bigger than your normal size will also help to ensure that you can easily layer it over other items.

A 3/4 length coat (one that is just above the knee) is flattering for most average height people. If you're petite a slightly shorter (medium length)coat is often better.

Coats that hit mid-thigh: If you're 5'3″ and under, a long coat can easily swallow up your petite frame. Coats and jackets that hit, at most, your mid-thigh will be your best bet when keeping you warm without overwhelming your stature.

Generally speaking, I recommend an overcoat hitting a couple inches above the knee, like we see in the images above. This offers the most versatility, since it can feel more casual when worn with jeans or odd trousers. For shorter guys, however, I would consider letting it drop below the knee a couple inches.

Cocoon coats are probably the best option, but an a-line coat is also great for making the waist appear slimmer. For a sportier feel consider a lined bomber jacket.
