In my late 20s I thought I invented the Perfect Manhattan co*cktail. When I started making and drinking Manhattans, all the co*cktail books I had mentioned sweet red vermouth, and all the bars in UT made theirs with sweet red vermouth so, to be different, I made mine with dry vermouth. One night, when I was making a Manhattan, I had a hankering for something a bit sweet and so I split the vermouth 50/50 (dry/sweet red) and it hit the spot. Perfectly.

I didn’t call it a Perfect Manhattan, I just called it My Manhattan. This went on for a few years and then one night after work I went to a co*cktail bar in Los Angeles, ordered “my” recipe and the bartender said “oh, you want it perfect”. He said it so matter-of-factly that I didn’t take it as condescending. It could be interpreted that way, but instead of getting offended, I got out my phone and Googled “perfect Manhattan” while he was mixing my drink. I tipped him a bit extra when I left.

For over 10 years this has been my recipe for making Manhattans. It’s become such a staple of mine that I keep a small bottle (200 ml) of 50/50 dry/sweet vermouth mix in my fridge. It only reduces one step, but that one step makes it a tad more convenient and hey, I was going to mix them anyway. My only real modification to this is that sometimes I’ll also express an orange peel and use it with the cherry for garnish. The citrus helps make the drink pop a bit more, but it’s not necessary.

So what about you? What’s your favorite way to make a Manhattan?

I love a Manhattan, too, though my go to is to the 2 1 3 Manhattan, 2 ounces of rye (Rittenhouse, please), one ounce of sweet vermouth, and 3 dashes of bitters. I read that the proceeding is so named as it’s the last three digits of Manhattan’s zip code. I’ve not bothered to see if that is true; I like the story, regardless.

In the heat of the North Carolina summer, I switch out the sweet vermouth for Cocchi Americano Rose’. I’ve dubbed it the “Summer Manhattan”. I stumbled upon it by accident. I had the Cocchi on hand a few years back thanks to another co*cktail need, and in my reading about it, it was compared with vermouth. One summer evening I found myself sans vermouth and thirsty for a Manhattan. Enter the Cocchi Rosa. It is a lighter bodied Manhattan with a slightly more bitter finish. It is lovely in the summer, give it a go; I think you’ll enjoy it.

I’ve always made my perfect Manhattan with Bianco vermouth(Usually Dolin) and Sweet vermouth.. never tried it with dry vermouth but I’ll give it a go. I might be forced to make one of each to do a taste test comparison.

For “My Manhattan” I like to sub out some of the sweet vermouth for some Punt E Mes which adds some nice herbal bitterness to balance the sweetness. The herbal flavors also go well with the rye too.

Getting that herbal pop is why I switched to Doppo for my red, but I can’t argue with using Punt E Mes, it’s delicious. Cheers Alex!
