Coco Chanel used links to Nazis and Churchill to seek end to war, book claims (2024)

In her book, Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life, Justine Picardie tells how the elegant French woman used her close relationship with senior German officers to try to win the freedom for her imprisoned "nephew" who, the author discloses, may even have been her son.

Furthermore, Picardie's book sheds fascinating new light on an attempt to initiate a peace process with Churchill because some senior Germans became convinced that Hitler was overextending himself in Europe.

This revelation of the designer's peace-seeking role, which was discovered by the author in the Churchill archives, came about because Chanel and the great wartime Prime Minister were friends long before the outbreak of hostilities.

There have been long-held suspicions that Chanel, who died in 1971 aged 87, was a collaborator and it has been known that she pursued an affair with Hans Gunther von Dincklage. who was the tall, blond, distinguished attaché to the German embassy in Paris.

The officer, who was known by his friends as Spatz – the German for sparrow – was 13 years younger than Chanel.

Their intimate relationship began in 1941 when the designer was 58. Later, when asked if she had been in a relationship with a German, Chanel famously replied: "Really, sir, a woman of my age cannot be expected to look at his passport if she has a chance of a lover."

Picardie says, however, that when Spatz proved unable to free her nephew, Chanel made "a catastrophic error of judgement" when she pursued a friendship with his friend, Captain Theodor Momm. In Picardie's book, which is serialised today in The Sunday Telegraph's Stella magazine, she writes: "But at some point in Chanel's negotiations with Momm, as the war dragged on through 1943, a bizarre plan began to take shape: that she would act as a messenger to Churchill, and thereby initiate a peace process."

The author writes that this secret plot – which could have led to the execution of senior Germans as traitors if it had been discovered by Hitler – led to "a misguided trip to Madrid, the consequences of which were to prove markedly compromising."

Critics of Chanel have long suspected her of having Nazi sympathies and of being guilty of anti-Semitism well before the war started in 1939. The book claims that she was under scrutiny from as early as 1929 because of her links to a suspected spy.

Picardie does not believe that Chanel was a full-blown collaborator and, instead, believes that the designer was pro-British and was genuinely trying to bring about an early end to the war.

The author concludes: "That Chanel's wartime record is imperfect is a reflection both of her own inconsistencies, and the inconsistent recording of them. But her conduct should also be seen in the context of an era of French history marked by widespread chaos confusion and uncertainty, as well as terrible tragedy."
