How does double action hinges work? ›

Double action hinges can be pushed open by an arm, hip, or hand. Once the doors are pushed open, they will swing back and forth, until they stop at the closed position of the center. Double action hinges use either spring or gravity to pull the doors back to the center.

How Do Spring Hinges Work. Spring hinges are fitted with a spring that slowly closes a door behind you. These hinges are adjustable so that you can choose how fast you want the door to close. Used in both residential and commercial applications, spring hinge doors also work as double-acting swing hinges.

A double acting door, also known as a double swinging door or impact traffic door, is a single door or a pair of doors in which the door(s) is able to swing in both directions.

If you're using one spring hinge per door, install it in the middle hinge position, with standard hinges at the top and bottom. For doors with two spring hinges, use a standard hinge at the top with spring hinges in the middle and bottom positions. Use the screws that come with each hinge to secure the hinge in place.

Double-action hinges are made of two connected hinges, with one sitting outside the door frame on the left and the other connected to the door frame on the right. They unfold in one direction and behave like normal hinges in the other direction.

Attaching New Hinges

Now you'll want to put the new hinges onto the doorframe (note we're fixing to the frame first and not the door). Before screwing the hinges in you'll want to ensure they sit flush.

We usually install the hinges on the inside of the jam. Positioning them on the inside makes them secure and keeps burglars from unhinging them. By contrast, screen doors or secondary glass doors will swing outward.

You can adjust the tension higher or lower by removing the pin in each hinge and adjusting the spring tension. Too low and the doors will sag, if the tension is too high the doors will swing with a lot of force.

Adjust Door Up or Down

Loosen the two mounting screws on both hinges, but only slightly. Often, turning the screw a quarter-turn or less counter-clockwise is enough to loosen the screws enough to let you move the door. It's preferable to have the screws too tight than too loose. Gently close the cabinet door.

Typically the center of the hinge is placed at 3 inches from the top and the bottom of the door. After drilling the mortise, the pilot holes for the hinge screws can be drilled. Note: Not all hinges have the same screw hole placement so you may want to double check before you drill.
