Components of Group Discussions: Purpose, Planning and Participation!

A discussion is possible for an individual only if he is part of a group. The origin of the word discuss is the Latin word disputer, which means ‘to shake’ or ‘to strike’.

Discussion begins with the sharing of views, information, etc. within a group. Thereafter, all this communication is shaken or stirred (as in a debate) through exchanges to enable the group to arrive at a decision.

Components of a discussion:

Here are the three components of a discussion:

1. Purpose:

The first components is the purpose of holding a group discussion. The aim of a group discussion is to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion. A group discussion usually helps to decide the next course of action.

Random talk without arriving at a decision is not a discussion. It is, therefore, important to clarify the purpose for which the discussion is being held. Once this has been done, the discussion is likely to stay on course.

2. Planning:

ADVERTIsem*nTS:

Planning is a crucial element. People decide the aim of the discussion. A group discussion that aims to arrive at some decision cannot just have random expression of ideas. The discussion has to be planned in such a manner that every step takes the group closer to its goal.

As such a group must have a leader or initiator. Such person or persons prepare an agenda, inform the members about the discussion, fix the time, date, and venue for a meeting. At the discussion, they ensure that the members do not wander from the basic agenda and purpose.

3. Participation:

The participation of members is the life of any group discussion. Members of a group have to be drawn out. It should not be dominated by a few. Although this does tend to happen in most group discussions, the silent members’ intelligent listening also helps.

A group discussion is held to invite maximum participation. Every member must, therefore, contribute his or her share of information, opinions, etc. Only then can the discussion be meaningful and effective.
