Conglomerate (2024)

Conglomerate is a coarse-grained sedimentary rock comprised of a finer-grained matrix of sand, silt, or clay plus rounded gravel (grains larger than 2 mm in diameter), such as pebbles, that have been naturally cemented together. Conglomerates are deposited in high-energy environments, such as fast-moving currents of rivers and streams. Some are lag deposits, in which finer sediments are winnowed away, concentrating the heavier gravel-sized particles. Conglomerates make up only a small percentage of all clastic sedimentary rocks.

A common use for conglomerate is as a source of aggregates for construction; rarely, it is used as a building stone. Most of Ohio’s conglomerates are of Carboniferous (Mississippian and Pennsylvanian) ages.

Composition: Quartz (SiO2)grainsand pebbles of various sizes with other compounds as cementing materials.
