If you’re into sneakers it’s likely that you’ve owned or own a pair of Converse over the years. The label has been around since 1908 and remains one of the most popular brands in the industry, offering countless popular silhouettes and regularly collaborating with some of the biggest names on the scene. Both the Chuck 70 and Chuck Taylor are easily the most well-renowned models within the Converse roster, however it can be dangerously difficult to tell them apart.

Materials
When directly comparing the Converse Chuck 70 and the Converse Chuck Taylor, one of the first major differences you’ll notice between the two is the varying fabrics used across the uppers. When the Chuck Taylor was created back in the day it was made to be a tough and hard-wearing basketball sneaker, using 12oz weave for a material that could withstand even the toughest of forces. However, when the model was reimagined for lifestyle purposes around the 1970s, a thinner fabric was chosen for comfort reasons. Thankfully, when the Chuck 70 returned in 2013, the original 12oz fabric returned once again, offering a premium level of durability throughout.

Sole
If we turn our attention further down the sneakers to the sole, there are also a few other obvious differences between the two models. The Chuck 70 offers up a varnished midsole and toe cap for a top quality edge, and it’s also a whole 5mm higher than the Chuck Taylor, a feature which was initially intended to improve stability during on-court manoeuvres. The Chuck 70 also features a thicker outsole that’s made from a singular slab of solid rubber, as opposed to the multi-piece outsole of the Chuck Taylor.

Inners
While the inner lining of sneakers isn’t something that sneakerheads tend to focus on all too often, it is indeed a valuable part of the construction, contributing highly to how comfortable a sneaker is overall. The thinner fabric of the Chuck Taylor isn’t quite as supportive as the heavyweight canvas of the Chuck 70, meaning a shaped heel-counter has to be inserted in order for the sneakers to stay structured. The Chuck 70 was blessed with more reactive cushioning than ever before during its 2013 remake, with contemporary arch support meaning these are the most comfortable iteration of the classic sneaker yet.

Branding
Last but by no means least, it’s important to note that there are plenty of variations of branding between the two similar silhouettes, even though both feature Converse’s iconic star logo on the medial sides. The Chuck 70 showcases Converse’s vintage-style branding across the heel counter, showcasing script logos and white-on-black branding, as opposed to the black-on-white modernised look of the Chuck Taylor. While both styles are great in their own respect, it really comes down to personal preference as to which is better here!
