La evolución de la moneda en Tailandia se remonta a la era Rattanakosin, marcando la emisión oficial de monedas y billetes estandarizados hechos en fábrica. El papel moneda hizo su debut en 1853 a través de pagarés reales, seguidos de billetes de bancos extranjeros. El año 1857 fue testigo de cómo Tailandia adquirió su máquina de acuñación inaugural, iniciando la acuñación de monedas de plata tailandesa. La optimización de la acuñación se produjo en 1897, condensando las 11 denominaciones en dos: satang y baht, bajo un sistema estándar de plata decimalizada.

Baht tailandés y monedas internacionales

El baht tailandés se vinculó inicialmente a la libra esterlina a una tasa fija de 8 THB a 1 GBP hasta el año 1880. Posteriormente, esta tasa se sometió a varios ajustes, vinculando el baht con el yen japonés a la par durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Después de la guerra, se fijó en 20,8 bahts por 1 dólar estadounidense, pasando a 20 bahts por dólar estadounidense en 1978 y luego a 25 bahts en 1984.

Una crisis financiera golpeó a Tailandia en 1997, causando una devaluación del 50% del baht y obligando a adoptar un sistema de tipo de cambio flexible. Tras este colapso económico, el baht tailandés terminó por estabilizarse.

Historia moderna del baht tailandés

A pesar de su uso oficial limitado a Tailandia, el baht tailandés se usa de manera informal en Laos, Camboya y Myanmar.

El 19 de diciembre de 2006, el Banco de Tailandia implementó controles de cambio que llevaron a diferencias sustanciales entre los tipos de cambio offshore y onshore, lo que resultó en diferenciales de hasta el 10 % entre estos mercados. Sin embargo, estos controles se levantaron en gran medida para el 3 de marzo de 2008, eliminando disparidades significativas entre los tipos de cambio offshore y onshore.
