Some people may ask why don't I use adhesive vinyl to make wood projects? Although using heat transfer vinyl is more troublesome than adhesive vinyl, in many cases, I prefer it. The reason is as follows:

Heat transfer vinyl is thin and flexible, so the vinyl looks like paint on a wood project. As you can see in the photo, the vinyl almost melts onto the wood after ironing.

If you have ever tried to make a DIY wood projectby applying a permanent adhesive vinyl decal to a piece of wood, You may experience some frustration. Sometimes, the texture of the wood may make it difficult to get heat transfer vinyl to stick to the wood.

Material to Be Used in This Cricut Wood Projects:

Here are the steps for using heat transfer vinyl on wood：

1. You first need to find your wood projects inspiration or decide what you want to create. I decided to grab a spare piece of wood and make a lovely "sunflower" decorative display.

2. The next step is to prepare the wood you want. Although unprocessed wood can also be used, it is recommended that you sand the wood before using heat transfer vinyl. This helps to remove or smooth out small fragments and uneven pieces on the wood to help the HTV adhere better and look smoother on the surface. Compared to using permanent adhesive vinyl, heat transfer vinyl can conform to rough wood better!

3. Select and create your design in the software that comes with your Cricut machine. Once your design is ready, load the heat transfer vinyl onto the cutting mat and let the Cricut machine do its magic. Make sure to mirror your design before cutting so that it appears correctly when applied to the wood.

4. After the design is cut, use the weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl, leaving only your desired design on the carrier sheet. This step requires patience and precision, as you want to remove the vinyl without damaging or distorting the design.

5. Next, position the design onto the wood surface. You can useheat tape to help with the alignment and placement of the vinyl. Once you're satisfied with the positioning, useHTVRONT AutoHeat Press or an household iron to apply heat and pressure onto the design.
For our HTVRONT heat transfer vinyl, it is recommended that you press it at a temperature of 302 degrees. Fahrenheit for 15 seconds on medium pressure.

6. Allow the heat transfer vinyl to cool before peeling off the carrier sheet. This will ensure that the vinyl adheres properly to the wood surface. If any parts of the design did not transfer, simply reapply heat and pressure to those areas until the vinyl sticks.

Cautions & Tips:
1. Mirror out of you need print image.
2. Your wood surface needs to be as smooth as you can make it, you can use fine grit sandpaper.
3. You do not need to preheat the wood with iron.
4. Check regularly to know when it reaches that temperature.
