Is D grade passing or failing? ›

The grades of A, B, C, D and P are passing grades. Grades of F and U are failing grades.

The capital “D" notation is called operator notation for differentiation. It is used a lot in differential equations.

A+, A, A- indicates excellent performance. B+, B, B- indicates good performance. C+, C, C- indicates satisfactory performance. D+, D, D- indicates less than satisfactory performance. F indicates unsatisfactory performance (no credit: always include last date of attendance).

At most schools, a D is the lowest passing grade. That means students who earn a D or higher receive credit for the course. However, some schools set special policies around D grades.

In undergraduate programs, 'D' is typically the lowest passing grade, but passing may not be enough to fulfill graduation requirements. The 'F' grade denotes poor performance and indicates failing a course. A student has an option to take the course with F grade either in study mode or examination mode when offered next. A student with F grade is also eligible to take Make-up Examination (see rule for Make-up examination: point no. 13).

It's a simple answer really. Back in 1897, the letter E used to mean the same thing as F; that is, it used to be the lowest possible grade. However, parents and students found it easier to understand that “F” stood for “Failed” (rather than thinking that “E” could mean “excellent”).

Usually in an 'A' - 'F' system, D+ is a passing grade. Anything above 60% is a pass.

If you receive a grade D result this means you have been awarded the course and you scored between 40 and 49% in the course assessment. Candidates who score less than 40% are not awarded a National Course and will receive a 'No Award' result.

Most colleges and universities generally consider a "D" (or a 60% to 69% score) as a passing grade. It's important to note that this minimum or lowest passing grade standard can significantly vary depending on the institution or major. Numerical and letter grades
