Dempsey Break (デンプシー破り, Denpushī-yaburi) is a counter against the Dempsey Roll.
Usage[]
The user takes a step back when their opponent uses the Dempsey Roll in order to get a wide field of vision, then throws a hook to counter the technique.
The Dempsey Roll is weak to counters. The predictable figure-8 back and forth motion of the Dempsey Roll makes it easy to follow, where they just need the correct timing to land it. However it takes a lot of courage and skill to be able to land a counter on it since it gives off an incredible amount of pressure.
Itagaki Manabu tried to research another method to counter the Dempsey Roll or lessen the pressure. He realised the reason why the Dempsey Roll gives off a lot of pressure is because of the limited field of vision or line of sight. Itagaki noticed the Dempsey Roll moves from blind spot to blind spot, when Ippo lowers his body it makes it harder to see. Where it makes it seem like Ippo is coming from somewhere they can't see. His solution is to take a step back and increase the field of view, and elements the fear from the blind spot, where the Dempsey Roll turns into a hook.
Makunouchi Ippo fixed the Dempsey Roll's weakness to counters by adding a stop-and-go motion to the Dempsey Roll, which makes it harder to counter due to the sudden change of timing and rhythm.
