Demystifying lip injections – Here’s the do’s & don’ts for the #perfectpout — The Retreat Medical Spa (2024)

We all want the perfect pout but are afraid of the unnatural ‘duck lip’. That’s easy fix! Dermal filler is an extremely safe option for achieving some seriously kissable lips. If you are considering plumping your lips the non-surgical way here are the do’s and don’t of
lip injections:

1. DON’T: NO blood thinners 7 days prior. This includes that enticing glass of your favorite wine. (Okay, okay!…ONE glass may not hurt but don’t get carried away.) Remember that alcohol can cause inflammation so if you can avoid it all the better!

  • Blood thinners to avoid include fish oils, Aspirin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Advil, etc. Got a headache?…Tylenol is okay! Blood thinners increase the likelihood of bruising

2.DO: Drink plenty of water! Relax and hydrate. Increase your water intake to help improve your body’s ability to heal.

3. DON’T: massage your lips. Trust me…it’s tempting to touch those newly luscious lips but leave well enough alone. Massaging freshly injected lips risks moving the filler around causing the possibility of desportation and undesirable results.

4. DO: Take into consideration you might be swollen for a couple of days…up to one week. This is completely NORMAL and the swelling will subside.

5. DON’T: Exercise for at least 24 hours following the treatment. You want to avoid activities that increase blood flow to your face. Although lip injections do not technically require any downtime, it’s best to ice down those beautiful plump lips in the effort to decrease inflammation.

6. DO: Take Arnica pellets. We recommend T-Relief which you can find online through amazon or at nearby health food stores such as the Sunflower Shoppe or the Vitamin Shoppe. Follow the directions on the box a few days prior to your appointment and a few days following.

  • Why you ask? Arnica is a homeopathic supplement that can help decrease bruising and swelling. We recommend taking this to all our patients prior to any injections and surgical procedures. (Please do not take T-Relief if you have an allergy to shellfish.)

How long do lip fillers last?

HA (Hyaluronic Acid) fillers such as Restlyane products last up to 12 months. Our bodies naturally metabolize the formula over time. Slowly! Schedule your follow up injections for 8 months out and if you need to cancel or push out further…that’s great! Dr. McLaughlin is very conservative and won’t inject if you don’t need it.

If you have a history of cold sores, what to do prior to injections?

Injections could trigger a cold sore. Dr. McLaughlin can prescribe a prevention medication to start taking two days prior to treatment.

Can you afford lip fillers?

Filler currently range from $600 to $650 a syringe with our office. Dr. Mclaughlin can help determine which filler is right for you and how many syringes your need. Generally, lips only need 1 – 2 syringes. Credit Card lovers…we take Care Credit! Get the lips you want NOW and pay later with Care Credit’s medical credit card.

Are lip injections painful?

Speaking from experience…not really! Most fillers are mixed with lidocaine + topical numbing is available but typically isn’t used because it can run in your mouth or if you lick your lips…it’s not particularly tasty. There is a tiny initial stick and then the lidocaine kicks in almost immediately. A stress ball does the trick easy! It’s over before you know it and your left with beautiful plump lips. WORTH IT!

Are fillers only for plumping lips?

NOPE! Fillers can help with fine lines around the lips sometimes called smokers line or cause by sucking from straws among many other uses for lost volume in the face. Book a consult with Dr. McLaughlin to see where and which fillers may be right for you.

See…lip injections aren’t scary! Knowledge is power. In the hands our sole injector, double board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Emily B. McLaughlin you’re dream lips are within reach.

FAQs

Why can't you go in sauna after lip filler? ›

Can I go to the spa after lip injections? Heat treatments should be avoided for a couple of days after treatment, again because the swelling could worsen with the heat. This means no spa, sauna or sun bed treatment for around 48 hours.

What is forbidden after lip filler? ›

Avoid hot environments

Heat can cause blood vessel dilation, which may worsen swelling. Don't expose yourself to direct sun sunlight and places or activities with high temperatures. Avoid hot saunas and baths, steam, or heated exercise for at least 48 hours after your lip filler treatment.

Where not to inject lip fillers? ›

You need to have an awareness of the depth of your injection. If you are very deep, and particularly close to the vermilion border, that is where the superior labial artery lies, which tends to be the area that gets occluded the most often.

Can I put Aquaphor on my lips after fillers? ›

Many providers recommend using Aquaphor as part of your lip injection aftercare instructions. Aquaphor can keep the lips soft and hydrated in the days following your treatment.

Does sauna ruin Botox? ›

The skin care after Botox can be impacted by the heat and humidity of a sauna. While there is no specific timeframe provided for how long to avoid saunas after receiving filler injections, it is generally recommended to wait at least 24 to 48 hours before exposing your face to extreme heat or steam.

How long after lip fillers can you give oral? ›

What about oral sex? For at least 2 days after lip fillers, you shouldn't engage in oral sex because it could put unwanted pressure on your lips, affecting your healing process. And since there are minor wounds after the treatment, the risk of STDs could be higher than usual. So, we recommend you wait.

What is the riskiest area for fillers? ›

The glabella, the area between the eyebrows, and the forehead are some of the most dangerous areas for dermal filler injections.

What is the danger zone for lip fillers? ›

The artery anastomoses with the inferior labial artery on the opposite side. The superior labial artery is larger than the inferior artery and runs along the inferior “wet” border. It has 2-3 branches towards nose including the alar branch and nasal septal. Avoid injecting the wet/dry border on the lower and upper lip.

Why did I stop using fillers after 2 years? ›

Sometimes, people break up with filler not because they're overfilled, per se, but because they're over filler — the look, the upkeep, the headaches — and this too is a form of fatigue. The filler becomes oppressive, a burden.

Should I ice lips after filler? ›

Do's – Things to DO after Lip Filler:

Apply an ice pack on the injected sites 2-3 times a day to reduce swelling. Brush your teeth gently. Take over-the-counter pain medications if required. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and fluids.

How long do I have to sleep on my back after lip injections? ›

Some patients like to sleep on their back the first night after treatment, although there is no hard evidence that sleeping position might affect your filler treatment. Avoid sleeping on your face for a week after treatment.

What is the best thing to put on lips after fillers? ›

Apply an ice pack for up to 10 minutes to reduce inflammation, pain and swelling. Avoid wearing lipstick, lip balm or any other product on your lips for at least 24 hours. Refrain from touching or puckering your lips, including kissing and sipping from a straw.

What happens if you sweat after lip filler? ›

It is advisable to avoid strenuous exercise after lip fillers. Physical activity increases body temperature and blood flow to your lips, worsening swelling and bruising. The sweat from exercises can also send a lot of bacteria to the injection site and increase the risk of infections.

Do lip fillers react to heat? ›

Extensive sun or heat exposure and alcoholic beverages may cause a temporary increase in redness, bruising or swelling at the injection sites. If there is persistent swelling or redness after the injections, you should limit exposure to sunlight or UV lamps until these symptoms subside (for at least 5-7 days).

What happens if I go to the gym after lip filler? ›

You Could Bruise Faster

If you recently had lip filler injections, don't head back to the gym right away. Dermal fillers take time, anywhere from 24 hours to a few weeks to mature in the skin. When you exercise, fillers absorb water from your tissues and may expand more quickly than they should.

How soon after lip filler can I have a hot drink? ›

Ideally, it would be best to wait to eat until after the numbing agent has worn off to avoid accidental injuries. In addition, we recommend avoiding excessively hot or cold drinks and chewy or crunchy foods for the first 24 hours following treatment.
