If you've searched for Destiny on a digital storefront recently, you might have been surprised to see that the base game is listed as being free. Now, developer Bungie has come forward to stress that the game has not switched business models or anything like that.
"The original Destiny adventure may appear to be free on some digital console marketplaces," Bungie wrote. "While players may download the Destiny base game, they will only be granted access to the Destiny Trial Mode for free. If players wish to progress through the original Destiny adventure via digital download, they will be required to purchase Destiny - The Collection to gain access to this content."
The Collection, which was announced last week, includes the base Destiny game and all DLC, including September's Rise of Iron expansion. The package will go for $60 when it launches in September, but pre-buying it now on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 unlocks everything except Rise of Iron right away.
Rise of Iron launches on September 20 for Xbox One and PS4, but not last-generation systems. It's Destiny's fourth expansion, following The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and The Taken King. The expansion adds new content in the form of quests, gear, and a raid. The Gjallarhorn is also coming back.

Why is Destiny 2 free? Because Bungie (the now-independent developer and owner of the Destiny franchise) has decided to make it free to download. If you question was more centered around the business model behind it, keep reading. Bungie wants to make as many people try out Destiny 2 as possible.
The Destiny 2: Forsaken Pack includes access to over 20 Forsaken Exotic weapons, The Shattered Throne dungeon, and Last Wish raid. The Destiny 2: Forsaken campaign is free for all players until February 22, 2022, and can be started by visiting the Tangled Shore.
While that story remains a crucial piece of the lore, players will be losing access to much of the content that came alongside it. Both The Dreaming City and The Last Wish raid will be sticking around, but the Tangled Shore is on the chopping block and taking Spider's hideout along with it.
When Destiny 2 first launched, it was a retail game sold both digitally and on physical media. A lot's changed since then, and the game's pricing structure is one of those things. As of 2019, Destiny 2 has been free to play. However, a lot of the game's content remains tied to paid expansions and season passes.
