Does Queen Elizabeth II Wear a Wig? (2024)

Over the years, the public has become so fascinated with the royals and every aspect of their lives. The most visible member of the royal family is Queen Elizabeth II who has been the monarch since 1952 so people always have questions about her. One rumor that has gained traction online is that she wears a wig, but is there any truth to that?

The rumor actually started years ago after a scary incident occurred at Buckingham Palace. Here’s more on that and what we know about whether or not that’s a wig on the queen’s head, plus which royal did wear one every day.

An intruder saw a wig on the queen’s dresser?

The queen has had the same hairstyle for most of her life. She’s been wearing it that way since the 1950s and stopped dying it brown by 1990, but rumblings that she wears a wig began after an intruder claimed to have seen one in her bedroom.

In 1982, a man named Michael fa*gan broke into Buckingham Palace not once but twice, and the second time he actually reached Queen Elizabeth’s bedroom. fa*gan is believed to have scaled 14-foot barbed-wire-topped walls, then climbed a drainpipe to the roof and entered the palace through an open window before finding his way to where Her Majesty was sleeping.

“I don’t know why I did it, something just got into my head,” he admitted later.

It was reported that while fa*gan was in her room he saw a wig on her makeup table.

But months after the incident, he did an interview with the Daily Star to set the record straight about a few things and denied seeing a wig.

“All that stuff that’s been written about her wearing a wig, a babydoll nightie, and whispering sweet nothings is rubbish,” fa*gan said, adding, “It’s not even worth thinking about.”

Is that the queen’s real hair?

Not only did fa*gan shoot down the reports that there was a wig in the queen’s room but there has never been evidence over the years or any more recent claims that she wears one.

Royal blogger Marilyn Braun had this to say when she was asked about if Her Majesty has a wig, “In all of the books I’ve read about her, I don’t think I’ve ever heard about her wearing wigs. I’m going to say no. I don’t think the queen wears wigs.”

We do know for sure is that another Queen Elizabeth wore wigs.

Elizabeth I, who was the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn, started wearing wigs when she was in her twenties. It’s believed that she suffered from hair loss after an illness and wore auburn wigs to match her natural hair color. As she aged, Queen Elizabeth II continued to wear colored wigs to conceal her grey hair.
