Does Shapewear Work? (2024)

//byCharlotte Haye

One of the things we get asked about a lot is does shapewear work. After all it’s a bit of an investment, and you want to be sure you’re getting your money’s worth before you buy. Shapewear is marketed as the thing to wear when you want a smoother figure under clothes so that you can look and feel confident, sexy and glowing. But some people have had negative experiences with shapewear, which can leave you feeling a bit unsure about the whole thing. So today we’re going to answer the big question – can shapewear really slim down your figure, just by pulling them on?

What Does Shapewear Do?

Shapewear is designed to smooth out your silhouette and create that nice, sleek shape that’s perfect under clothes. It uses compression, certain martials, seam placement and panelling to smooth out lumps or bumps, squeeze everything in a little bit and make you feel more comfortable in your clothes and look amazing. And the best part? You can choose how much control you have. Shapewear generally comes in three firmness levels, so that you can get the exact results you want. Your options include:

Light: Perfect for smoothing out a few bulges and generally make your clothes fit a little better. This level is ideal for everyday wear for that added confidence boost.

Firm: To accentuate your curves and show off your figure. This level of support adds subtle contours to your shape and holds everything in place.

Extra-Firm: The highest level of control you can get, usually reserved for special occasions when you want to feel flawless. Extra-firm shapewear works very well under structured clothes like wedding dresses, evening gowns and co*cktail dresses, leaving you looking your best without feeling restricted.

So Does It Work?

Absolutely! When it comes to shaving off a few inches and smoothing out your figure, there is nothing better than shapewear. However there are a lot of different options out there, including different firmness’s and different styles and cuts, which means you do need to some reading and experimentation before you find the right piece for you. For example:

  • If you’re looking to smooth out your hips, low waisted control brief are a great option.
  • If you have a slinky black dress you want to look amazing in, a shapewear slip is perfect.
  • If you want to pull in your stomach and smooth out awkward lines, high-waisted briefs will work wonderfully.
  • Need some definition on your thighs? Shaping shorts are the way to go.

Not all shapewear will work for all women – but that’s the beauty of it. You can find something that works for you and makes you feel the best you can. Each cut of shapewear targets a different area of the body, and the control levels give you a range of options from light to extra-firm, so that you can choose how much you want everything squeezed in and smoothed out. So if you’ve struggled finding shapewear that works for you in the past, it might just be that you haven’t found the right type.

Can Shapewear Help Me Lose Weight?

Ultimately? No. Day to day shapewear is designed just to enhance your natural figure, not permanently alter it in any way. The only thing that can do that is diet and exercise. But there are some types of shapewear that can be used alongside diet and exercise to help you control the shape of your body as it changes. These are called waist trainers, and are a much more structural kind of shapewear that’s usually only worn for permanent change. We’ve written more about waist trainers here.

In short, yes shapewear does work, providing you understand what it’s supposed to do. Everyday shapewear isn’t designed to be a weight loss aid. Instead, it’s a helpful tool to smooth out your silhouette and make you feel amazing in anything you wear. It’s all about confidence!
