Dressing For Androgyny: A Guide For AFAB People (2024)

Hey guys, gals and non binary pals! Welcome to another blog post. Before I get into it I just want to apologize for being away for so long. I had to take a bit of a break for my mental health, but I’m back now and I’m really excited to continue working on this blog for you wonderful people. Thank you so much for your continued support of this blog, I love what I’m doing and I’m so happy that you’re enjoying it.

And now onto the blog. A few weeks ago, I posted a guide to androgyny for AMAB people, and in that I said that I would soon post a guide for AFAB people.

So, here we are.

In that post I included the definition of androgyny and a kind of background on it. If you haven’t read that, you can click here so that you’re all up to date. Today I’m just gonna jump right into it without too much introduction.

So, the things about androgyny for AFAB people is that you’re basically trying to cover up curves. AMAB people tend to have thinner hips and wider shoulders, so you want to try and mimic that as much as possible.

To give the illusion of this, the best thing is sharp line and patterns. Button up shirts often have sharp lines and are typically associated with masculinity, so those are always a good option. Patterns on the shirt also limit the perception of a larger chest because it’s harder to see any change in shape. DO NOT WEAR STRIPES. They make the shape of your chest really obvious and make it very difficult for you to appear androgynous.

Short hair is also basically a must. You can achieve the appearance of short hair by tying up long hair and covering it with hats, but androgyny is much easier if you’ve got short hair.

Many AFAB people who want to achieve a look of androgyny also wear a binder. While binders are mostly safe, avoiding one if at all possible is a good idea. They usually won’t damage you permanently, but they’re not the best for your health. If you want to have a more flat chest, layering tight clothes can be good, sports bras are also good. Make sure that you never wear a binder or anything like that for more than 8 hours at a time.

Another good thing is to wear slightly loose jeans. If you go too baggy you’re going to end up looking like you just stepped out of the 90s, but skinny jeans show your wide hips. Try buying them in the men’s section. Go for a tapered, slim or straight fit.

Makeup can also be used to give the appearance of masculinity. Thicker brows and more defined cheekbones are typically masculine traits that can be achieved with makeup. There are plenty of videos on the internet, just google “masculine makeup” and you should find a bunch of things to use.

Jewelry is not typically considered but things like thick bracelets and darker necklaces can give a more masculine appearance to an outfit. Chord bracelets, wooden beaded necklaces, etc. It’s all about finding what works for you. Remember, androgyny is about non-conformity, so there is no specific type of androgyny that you have to conform to.

So, that’s pretty much everything. Hopefully you have found some of this useful, if so hit that like button, I really appreciate it. I’d also love to see how you’re making androgyny work for you. You can send pictures on Instagram or Pinterest, I might start featuring pictures of some androgynous cuties over on my Instagram. Otherwise, you can just let me know in the comments what works to make you feel androgynous.

If you want to see when I post something you can click on the follow button down there, you don’t even have to have a WordPress account.

Hope you have a wonderful week and I’ll see you next time.
