From differentiating their product offerings to catering to their clients' profile, external asset managers face their fair share of hurdles.

Private markets may have piqued the interest of wealthy investors, but for external asset managers to compete in the growing landscape, they have to tacklea slew of challenges, ranging from differentiating their product suites, to catering to their clients’ profile.

For multi-family office Plutus Asset Management, the difficulty has beenthe scarcity of high-quality deals in the private market, and the limited skills of investors in analysing such opportunities, said CIO Colin Chau.

‘Hence, not many clients would engage our services in private markets and opt for buying a private markets fund instead,’ said Chau, who prefers to use private markets opportunities to brush up the younger clients’ investment knowledge.
