Thoth is one of the oldest worshiped deities in Egyptian culture and the history of the world. He began as a local god worshiped in Khemenu. Three myths are surrounding the birth of Thoth.
The first one is that Thoth is born during a struggle for the throne of a unified Egypt. Set and Horus are locked in an 80-year struggle to determine who will be the Pharaoh of Egypt. Egyptian lore details how Thoth is born from the forehead of Set during one of these challenges. Both Set and Horus are the parents of Thoth in this version, but it is Horus' sem*n who makes the god.
In another origin story, Thoth is present at the beginning of all creation. In this story, he is known as the "god with no mother". He is fathered by Ra, the male sun god. Thoth is birthed from the lips of Ra.
The final theory in Egyptian mythology is that Thoth is self-created at the beginning of creation. From this perspective, he wills himself into existence by talking. This is why he is credited with inventing language and being the Egyptian god of knowledge.
Thoth plays a salient role in Egyptian mythology. He is credited with inventing writing and writes the ancient texts of Egypt. Thoth is the scribe to the gods, including the underworld. He takes the form of A'an to pass his fair judgment upon the dead, alongside Osiris, the leader of the Afterlife.
Thoth goes on to create the first lunar calendar and the modern 365-day calendar as well.

In other stories, his wife is Ma'at, the goddess who symbolizes divine principle. She embodies the notions of truth, order, balance, and justice. In ancient texts, Ma'at is a woman wearing a crown and an Ostrich feather. She is also a winged goddess.
Nemehtaway is sometimes referred to as a wife to Thoth in other myths. She is a protector goddess, but little else is known about her.

Thoth's principal temple is in Khmun, where he is primarily worshipped as an integral component of the Ogdoad pantheon. During the Ptolemaic Era, this temple was called Hermopolis, a nod to the Greek messenger god, Hermes.
