Elvis ‘ordered gobs of burgers’ – King's favourite fast foods unveiled (2024)

The Beatles discuss meeting Elvis

Elvis Presley had some eccentric eating habits during his lifetime, with his appetite for peanut butter and banana sandwiches being best known. The King loved fast food and now one of his family members has shared his favourite Memphis takeaway chains while living at Graceland from 1957-1977. His cousin Danny Smith, who grew up at the mansion was recently asked on his YouTube channel if Elvis ever ordered out fast foods.

The Memphis Mafia Kid said: “Yes he did. A lot of the times Krystal hamburgers was probably one of the main ones.

“And he had ordered, oh gobs and gobs of them. And everybody up in Graceland would eat on them.”

The fast-food chain was founded in 1932 and has locations to this day in the Southeastern United States.

The restaurant is well known for its square hamburgers called sliders with steamed-in onions.

On Elvis’ other favourites, Danny said: “He ordered McDonald’s, Pancho’s Mexican [Buffet] and so many others.

“The answer to that is yes he did order from fast foods. Not all the time, but y’know a good portion of the time.”

Pancho’s was first founded in West Memphis in 1956 and is Tex-Mex all-you-can-eat joint.

Sadly, according to Commercial Appeal, the chain’s last two Memphis restaurants are set to close with the company focusing on Pancho’s cheese dip instead, which is sold in over 1200 stores.

Danny, the son of Memphis Mafia member Billy Smith, also highlighted how good the food prepared at the mansion was.

He said: “And then the rest of the times…we would just order something and eat it at Graceland if we were out there.

“The food, it didn’t matter what you had, it was better than any restaurant. We loved it.”

According to Graceland archivist Angie Marchese, Elvis particularly loved Southern home cooking.

“He loved meatloaf, mashed potato, fried chicken…mac & cheese. Anything that he grew up on were some of his favourites. Anything but fish. He didn’t like the smell of fish being cooked in the house. There was never any fish in the house.”

In fact, The King loved meatloaf and mashed potatoes so much that at one point he ate them every day for dinner over a period of six months.

Obsessively eating one kind of food over and over again until he became bored of it was commonplace for this creature of habit.
