Why is Tom so horrible to Belle in Emmerdale? ›

At the start, his relationship with Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) appeared to be going well, but things took a seriously dark turn when Tom snapped at Belle over not wanting to get married, which resulted in him pushing Belle into a table. Now that they're married, Tom's abusive behaviour has continued.

However, after Tom contacted her, she headed to the church and managed to get wed to her fiancé. At the wedding reception though, Ruby caused a scene as she stood up and exposed Caleb and Tracy's affair. Tom was livid and went back home to blame Belle for her family ruining their big day.

This week saw Belle decide to terminate her pregnancy, but she told Tom that she had a miscarriage. In upcoming scenes, Tom will find out that Belle secretly visited the abortion clinic, and in his angry state, he trashes a nearby barn. But he takes things too far and electrocutes himself, before losing consciousness.

Despite Tom expressing how excited he is to become a father, Belle has decided to terminate her pregnancy in secret. When Belle lies to him about suffering a miscarriage, Tom's rage spills over and his violent outburst in the barn leads to him being electrocuted, while Belle flees the village.

Belle was sent to prison after she caused the death of Gemma Andrews (Tendai Rinomhota) after pushing her during a fight. Her mental health suffered while she was away and on her release she started to hallucinate, believing she could see and talk to Gemma. Belle was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia.
