Do I need an ETA for South Korea? ›

K-ETA is required for foreign nationals who intend to enter the Republic of Korea for tourism, visiting relatives, participate in events or meetings, and business purposes other than profitable activities.

☞ If there are no issues, generally the application will be automatically approved within 30 minutes. ☞ If any issues arise, the K-ETA official will check and determine the traveler as 'Selectee*' or 'Not OK' within 24 hours.

o From Sep 2021, nationals of visa waiver countries and designated visa-free countries MUST obtain ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before entering The Republic of Korea.

⏳ How long is the K-ETA valid? Once issued, a K-ETA is valid for 2 years for multiple entries from the approval date on the document. If your passport expires before these 2 years, you will have to reapply for K-ETA, the authorisation being linked to a passport number.

If it is information related to your stay (such as the address where you will be staying once in Korea), you can update it on the website in the eArrival Card section. The cost of the K-ETA is currently 10,000 won (about $10) and is non-refundable, even if the authorization application is denied.

Most applicants get their eTA approval (via an email) within minutes. However, some requests can take several days to process if you're asked to submit supporting documents.

The nationals of visa-waiver countries/regions (B-1) and designated visa- free entry countries/regions (B-2) are eligible for K-ETA (112 in total). However, due to COVID-19, currently only the nationals of 50 countries/regions (refer to Q1) can apply for K-ETA.

ㅁ How to Apply

- You can apply for your K-ETA at the official K-ETA website www.k-eta.go.kr or mobile app 'K-ETA'. - You must apply for K-ETA no later than 72 hours before your flight or ship bound to the Republic of Korea. ※ In case of K-ETA denial, applicant must apply visa and it takes around 2 weeks.

1) If you are a national from K-ETA eligible country, you must apply for K-ETA first. If it is found that you applied for visa without first applying for K-ETA, your visa application will be rejected.

Citizens from select visa-required countries may be eligible to apply for an eTA, instead of a visa, to travel to Canada by air. However, these travellers need a visitor visa when arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including a cruise ship.

Is eTA same as visitor visa? ›

You may be eligible to apply for an eTA (instead of a visitor visa) if you're a: Citizen from select visa-required countries and you're travelling to Canada by air. However, you still need visitor visa (not an eTA) when arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including a cruise ship.

This visa stream lets you visit Australia as a tourist, to go on a cruise or to see family and friends. Due to COVID-19, some visa processing times have been affected and applications may take longer to finalise.

K-ETA is valid for 2 years once issued. It can be used for multiple times within its validity.

If you apply for an eTA at an airport, and your eTA is not approved in time for you to check-in for your flight, you will need to reschedule your flight.

eTAs can also be obtained via smartphone or tablet. This means that if a traveller has forgotten to obtain an eTA, they will be able to do so at the airport.

Can I go to South Korea without a visa? ›

The Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) became mandatory on 1 September 2021. K-ETA is required for all tourists of visa-free nationals. Travelers from visa-free countries must obtain K-ETA before embarking on their journey to South Korea. Nationals of 112 countries below can apply for K-ETA.

Many travelers – including those from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and most European countries – can visit Korea for up to 90 days with no visa required.

For US citizens you must have a valid passport to enter the Republic of Korea.
