People who influenced Venice
Venice would not be what it is today without the work of many famous personalities. Many artists, painters, architects and adventurers determined the fate of the city and achieved fame far beyond the city limits. Many of these personalities were not even born Venetians, but the influence of the Doge republic attracted many of these artists to the city on the water. In addition to famous painters such as Titian, Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Veronese, other artists such as Palladio, Monteverdi and Vivaldi worked here. Venice: City of Art
You will find works by famous Venetian painters scattered throughout the city. Its most famous artists include Canaletto (1697 – 1768), Tintoretto (1518 – 1594) and Giovanni Bellini (1430 – 1516), as well as Tiepolo (1696 – 1770), Titian (1488 – 1576) and Veronese (1528 – 1588). Giovanni is the main representative of the Venetian Renaissance, and many of his early works are on display in the Accademia. Veronese, Titian and Tintoretto are considered to be the most important painters of the late Venetian Renaissance. Their works are to be found in all churches both big and small throughout Venice. Canaletto and Tiepolo are among the last great Venetian painters – while Canaletto is know for his townscapes, Tiepolo is like no other a representative of the Venetian rococo.
Architects and musician
Two foreign architects are largely responsible for Venice’s present-day appearance: Andrea Palladio (1508 – 1580) and Sansovino (1486 – 1570). The great Renaissance architect Palladio designed the exterior facades of the three church buildings of San Francesco della Vigna, San Giorgio Maggiore and Il Redentore. Sansovino, however, left his mark on the rest of the city like no other. His works include15 churches and public buildings, as well as the still poses in the Doge’s Palace and the tomb of Doge Venier. In the area of music it was above all the chapel master of St. Mark’s Basilica Claudio Monteverdi (1567 – 1643) and the important composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) who worked in Venice. Their works are still known today throughout the world.
Other important personalities
When looking for other important personalities, three big names stand out: the famous adventurer and traveller Marco Polo (1254 – 1423), the master of the art of love Giacomo Girolamo Casanova (1725 – 1798) and the art collector Peggy Guggenheim (1898 – 1979).
