Fast fashion - A wicked problem (2024)

Over the last century, with the rapid growth of life quality, clothing has become not only an everyday essential but also a remark of identity and personal expression. It has grown to be an indispensable part of every human being, to the extent that most of us tend to overlook its environmental and social consequences. Especially with the significant development of the fashion industry, access to apparels is now easier than it has ever been, resulting in a modern culture of fast-manufacturing, fast-buying and fast-disposal, which is also known as fast fashion. Despite the fact that fast fashion is not yet to be commonly known as a problem, it is evident and dangerous due to its direct and indirect impact on all living creatures on Earth. Fast fashion disposes more waste, uses up more natural resources and provides poor working conditions for its workers. Therefore, social awareness, immediate attention and effort are vital in order to effectively tackle this problem. One of the quickest, most effective solutions to this problem is directly dealing with the huge amount of clothes people are getting rid of every day, or in other words, creating more engagement in the thrift-shopping culture. As a fashion enthusiast and an advocate for more sustainable clothing, I have come up with the ideaThrift&Flip” – an online business that sells selected, customized yet affordable vintage clothing for customers at the age from 15 to 30.
