Abrams & Matt Reeves managed to make the ending of Felicity's time in college memorable. Four years is a long time in anyone's life, let alone that of a slightly-neurotic romantic college student like Felicity. The best thing was that the show was done before it wore out it's welcome. Either because of the network, or just because storyline-wise it was the best thing to do, it doesn't matter. It ended when it should have. & they wrapped up the time travel thing alright, I guess. The BadSorry, I meant they wrapped it up WRONG! Hmm, if you don't know the story behind the time travel episodes of Felicity, but andythesaint kinda filled me in on the details. Apparently, the network wasn't sure if they were going to pick up a full 22 episodes of Felicity, or just go with 18. So, erring on the side of caution, Abrams wrapped up the whole Felicity thing in the 18 episodes. Then the network said they wanted the full 22. With a minimum of spoiling intent, Felicity ends up going back in time to get together with Noel instead of Ben. People think she's crazy at first, then some warm up to the idea, namely Ben & Meghan (to a point). So they find Kurt Fuller (or the character Fuller plays) & get him to send her back to the future. In case you don't know, this is the wrong way to do time travel, in my humble opinion. Why? BECAUSE IT'S WRONG dammit! *shudders* The next paragraph is spoiler heavy. In the real ending of the show, Elena died in a car accident, & Noel was about to be married to Zoe. Felicity goes back in time to the night that she cheated on Ben with Noel, because Ben cheated on her in the real ending. Got that? Okay, she goes back & completely wigs Noel out, not to mention nearly crushes Ben. Along the way in the past, she discovers that she might be doing more harm than good, as Sean & Meghan don't get married, & Felicity gets committed by Ben & Noel, but not before revealing some future to Ben. Then Ben breaks her out of the mental health ward, & Noel dies in a fire. Soooo, in this alternate reality she finally finds Kurt Fuller's character (before he's wrote his book that she used in the future) & (in a deleted scene) tells Elena to go to Duke, not Columbia, so she'll live. *deep breath* So in this alternate reality she wants to go back to the future, & gets her wish. Because this is the alternate reality, Elena heeded her wish & is still alive. Yet, so is Noel!?!? The lesson, good TV watchers, is don't mess around with time travel, because I will analyze your sh*t & call you on it. The VerdictAnyways, I have kind of a mixed opinion about the final season of Felicity. Even the time travel episodes were pretty fun stuff, until that last episode kinda killed it for me. The ending is what should've been, this is true, but the fourth season seemed to be all about cramming as much unneccessary drama into as possible. Worth mentioning is just how much a few characters completely slid into the background. There was barely any interaction at all with Elena in this season, to the point where they should've just renamed her Token. I'm fairly ambivalent to the whole season, & for that I blame the network. If they'd have come to some sort of permanent decision earlier in the season, Abrams could've used those extra 4 or 5 eps to plan out a grander ending. As it stands, a decent enough show that makes me relieved I didn't go to college. Past SeasonsSeason One

16th-Apr-2005 11:16 am (UTC) | | I share your frustrations about the time travel. Either Noel or Elena should have been dead at the end. The way they could have gotten around it is by having Noel in coma instead of being dead, conceivably, Felicity travelling back to the future could have led to him coming out of the coma. Or, at least more conceivably than him not dying, yet Elena being affected into making a decision that doesn't kill her later after his death. Even before Noel died, thus ruining the time travel thing altogether, the extra episodes didn't sit well with me because they sh*t all over the growth of Ben as a character. More than anyone else, I found that season four was a season of real personal growth for Ben Covington. In fact, I think he developed and evolved more than any other character throughout the four seasons. So, Ben finally grows into the person Felicity always hoped he would become, giving us that great "final" scene where he comes to Felicity in Paulo Alto, and then in the next episode he cheats on her. So much for all that personal development. | | |
