A 2017 survey of men in the United States found that four percent of men aged 51 years and older wore thongs at least occasionally, while 96 percent of men in that age group reportedly never wore thongs.

Overall, about one percent of men in the United States wore thongs several times week, while zero percent wore them on a daily, or almost daily basis. The overwhelming majority of American men do not wear thongs at all. In terms of ethnicity, 95 percent of Asian American men never wear thongs, compared to 87 percent of Hispanic American or Latino men and 92 percent of white American men.
