Thinking about how Billy’s last words to Max were “I’m sorry.” Thinking about how Max was probably wanting to hear those words for years and years … she wanted Billy gone. She wanted him dead. And she also wanted her brother to apologize to her. She wanted to have a real sibling relationship with him. She wanted to have that chance.
He finally says “I’m sorry” and it’s too late. She doesn’t have time to forgive him because how can she? How can she forgive him for all those years of hurt? But she wanted to have the chance to forgive him.
And she never got that chance. She’ll never get that chance just like Billy will never have the chance to change and grow and make up for all the wrongs he made.
He proved himself to be a heroic person, in the end, but death stole the chance for him to grow beyond the angry boy that he had become.
