In today’s post, I wanted to address some common questions that I receive about my Gucci belt. I’ve had my Gucci belt for almost four years and while I do consider the hype around the belt has mellowed somewhat in recent years, it continues to be one of the most versatile luxury pieces in my collection. I just love how it elevates the simplest of outfits and comes in so many different options to suit your personal style.

That said, with so many different options available, it can be a tad overwhelming to choose the right belt for you. Aside from sizing, which I address in my guide here, choosing the right width is arguably the more difficult decision. Then there are other considerations like the hardware of the buckle and the leather.

So in this post, I thought I’d address some of the common considerations to take into account when buying a Gucci belt.

Choosing the right width

Choosing a belt width comes down to personal preference and how you plan on styling the belt. The belt comes in three different widths – 2cm (0.75”), 3cm (1”) which is also known as the men’s belt, and 4cm (1.5”). While on paper, the variations in width appear minimal, the small differences are very noticeable when worn as you will see in the comparison shots I’ve included in this post.

I’m 5’2” or 158cm, and I opted for this 3cm width version, also known as the men’s belt. It’s the ultimate “Goldilocks” size in that it’s not too wide, and not too narrow – it’s just right for how I’ve enjoyed styling it.

Choosing the right size

There are lots of guides out there that suggest you choose between either wearing the belt on your waist, or around your hips. Personally, I think you can do both by buying a slightly bigger size to suit your hips and then get additional holes punched so that it can also be worn at your waist. And while it’s not ideal to have holes punched to ‘alter’ a designer item that you’ve just purchased, it’s been almost four years since I’ve had my belt and I haven’t looked back – the additional holes have made my belt incredibly versatile.

The sizing is in centimetres (starting from 65cm) and there are 5 holes on the belt. I personally went with a size 80 and had two additional holes punched in by a cobbler.

Choosing the right leather & hardware

The classic belt range comes in either Palladium (a silver tone) or Antique Brass (a gold tone). Both come in either a matte or shiny finish. The shiny finish is certainly the “blingier” option between the two!

Antique Brass (3cm Black Leather) vs Shiny Brass (3cm Red Leather)

I’ve seen the belts in a variety of leather finishes – smooth, textured and faded. The faded leather is the most casual of the three finishes – with an overall rustic look. The smooth finish is the cleanest finish of the lot (and the version I have) and the textured finish is just a heat-stamped version of the smooth leather, that’s similar in look and feel to saffiano leather.

I hope my Gucci belt comparison and imagery was helpful to any of you considering buying this belt. As always, thanks for stopping by!
