Sustainability Practices

Hollister takes wide-ranging measures to reduce its environmental impact, aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals 6, 12, 15, and 17.

Hollister only uses a small proportion of organic materials such as organic cotton or recycled materials such as recycled polyester and regenerated nylon.

Most of the fabrics it uses are either natural without relevant certifications, such as regular cotton or linen, or synthetic petroleum-based fibers such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and more.

Hollister also uses a little amount of semi-synthetic fibers or regenerated cellulosic fabrics such as cupro and viscose.

Hollister publishes a list of all its manufacturers on its corporate website. It ensures that its products are made in safe and responsible factories.

The 2021 Fashion Transparency Index gave Hollister a score of only 20% based on how much the group discloses about its social and environmental policies, practices, and impacts.

Hollister manufactures its clothes in Turkey and many other East Asian countries where human rights and labor law violations still happen every day.

The American clothing retailer doesn't show any labor certification standard that would ensure good working conditions, decent living wages, health, safety, and other human rights for workers in its supply chain.

Hollister has a code of conduct that applies to all its suppliers and subcontractors based on the regulations set by the International Labor Organization (ILO).

Hollister assesses compliance with its Code of Conduct by informal visits or third-party audits with or without notice. It audits 100% of its Tier 1 cut & sew factories.

Hollister doesn't use any exotic animal skin, hair, fur, or angora. But it uses leather, wool, silk, and down feathers to manufacture many of its clothing pieces.

These animal-derived materials are cruel and unethical. They also harm the environment by producing greenhouse gases and waste. More sustainable alternatives exist.

Sustainability Goals

Hollister has committed to reducing its environmental impact across the supply chain. It plans to reduce waste by 50% by 2025 compared to the 2017 baseline.

Hollister plans to reduce its GHG emissions by 47% in its Scope 1 and 2 by 2030. It will use 100% renewable electricity for corporate facilities in 2023.

Hollister strives for at least a 30% water reduction in denim production by 2022. By 2025, it will source 25% cotton through the Better Cotton Initiative and 25% polyester from recycled materials, and 50% viscose from Canopy.
