Horus and Jesus: A Common Atheist Argument... (2024)

Some say that Horus, the Egyptian deity was born of a virgin birth 3000 years before Christ was to come to earth and thus the story of Christ is actually a re-written version of the Egyptian story.Egyptian texts demonstrate that Horus’ mother was the goddess Isis, and not a human virgin. According to the story, Horus was conceived when Isis resurrected the dismembered god Osiris and had intercourse with him, which precludes the idea of virginity. However, Isis' intercourse with Osiris did not involve the use of Osiris' male genitalia. Rather, a golden penis was used that was supposedly fashioned by Isis herself. This standing, the story claims Horus was divinely conceived of a female whom had not had intercourse with a living male person. The term "virgin" is therefore highly debatable in reference to Isis. Horus' birth by divine intervention through a female whom had not had intercourse with a man not as debatable. If you analyze this story and the story about Christ, you come to the conclusion that one must be an imitation of the other - or that similar stories seemed to be passed around by different religious groups during a multi-thousand year period.Let's explore this a bit...

Here is an interesting fact - The earliest prediction of Jesus Christ's birth occurred about 4000 B.C. and is recorded in Genesis. 3:15. Many other prophecies occur throughout time prior to his actual birth and possibly the most significant prediction is found in Daniel 9:25-26. It was written somewhere around 538 B.C. and gives the exact year, A.D. 33, in which Jesus Christ would die. This means that the earliest recorded prophecy about Christ is recorded approximately 1000 years before Horus is supposedly born. It is also important to note that the prophecies recorded in the Old Testament or the Jewish Torah are only a small collection of the writings and stories that were shared at that time. These were the ones that the Jewish people and Christians say were preserved by God to be a part of the modern day scriptures meant for teaching, correction, etc. Many other stories existed that told of the coming savior but are not included in the modern day religious texts.

Another fundamental teaching within the Jewish and Christian faith is that the forces of evil, more commonly known as "the enemy" or the devil, will always take what God has given to us and twist it into a counterfeit to try to undermine the true Godly story or meanings.

It is my belief and the belief of many highly schooled scholars that the story of Horus is simply a pagan re-write of the prophecies of Christ meant to preemptively undermine the cause of Christ and his legitimacy or to mock the Jewish prophesies about the coming savior.

The story of Horus is often given as proof by atheists that the Christ story is a fake, a copy of the story of Horus.Given the claims I make above I want to ask you to consider the following:

The stories about Horus are brief and vague. We have very little to go on other than some short writings, carvings, some artifacts and a few drawings.

However, the prophecies about Christ are numerous. There are 31 solid and universally accepted ones as well as many more that are ascribed to Christ that I won't even count at this time. If we turn these 31 prophecies into a game of chance and look a the numbers as raw data, we get see a pretty clear picture. For instance, it is estimated that there were 250 million people alive in the world in A.D. 33 - the year Jesus died. This means that one male out of the 250 million people in A.D. 33 would have had to die that year by crucifixion, be of Jewish descent from King David, be born in Bethlehem, have been a teacher using parables, healed others and performed miracles. He would have had to ride into Jerusalem on a donkey, been rejected by the leaders and then died four days later with no broken bones but with pierced feet, hands and side during absolute darkness. This individual would have had to die during one unique week - the predicted week.

The probability of all of this happening to one single male, is:

1 out of 2.54 x 10**28

To many people, that chance is kind of vague and hard to conceptualize so let's illustrate it in a way that you may be able to understand better. Lets start with an American dime, which is approximately, 3/4 inch in diameter and 1/16 inches high. Now imagine that someone takes the planet earth and hollows it out and starts filling it with dimes. He/she would need to fill 10 earths full of dimes to represent all of the chances associated with just these prophecies. Next let us paint one of the dimes red. The probability that one person fulfilled all of these prophecies by chance would be the same as a blindfolded person picking out that one red dime on their first try.

Yet, historical writings and recordings outside of the Torah and Bible support all of this actually happening. The Bible and these historical documents also show us that the followers of Jesus in the early years after his death gave up their very homes and jobs and even their own lives just to walk around and tell people about this happening. They were often killed using torturous methods such as being torn apart, fed to animals, hung upside down on crosses or even being boiled alive in hot oil....All for a few stories?No...All because they heard about these prophecies and then invited God into their lives and found him to be real. They weren't rebels trying to take over the world, they were servants trying to help the world understand the redemption offered by this guy named Jesus.

So the next time someone tells you that the story of Jesus is fake, made up, and is simply a fabrication based on the story of Horus, you can give them a link to this explanation or share it in your own words....And then ask them if they have the guts to invite Jesus to reveal himself to them. Tell them they can do it right there or in their own quiet time. But challenge them to ask God to reveal himself to them, because if God is real, then everything in life is secondary to having a relationship with him.
